Major John W. Reed

Sept 15, 1932 - Feb 21, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John W. Reed, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who died on February 21, 2025, at the age of 92.

Born on September 15, 1932, John was a man of extraordinary dedication and service. After attending the University of Missouri, he proudly served in the United States Air Force for 25 years, rising to the rank of Major. Throughout his distinguished military career, he received the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, 2 Meritorious Service Awards, and 2 American Air medals for his bravery and exemplary service.

After retiring from the Air Force, John transitioned to a career as a research physicist, focusing on infrared research, a field in which he made significant contributions. His passion for exploration, both in science and life, extended beyond his professional work. John was an avid astronomer and a long-standing member of the Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston (ATMoB), sharing his love of the stars with fellow enthusiasts.

John's devotion to service was not confined to his professional and military roles. He was deeply involved in his community, especially through his work with the Boy Scouts, where he served as an assistant scout leader to Lexington troop 120. His mentorship and guidance touched many lives, and his commitment to helping others was evident in every aspect of his life.

John's family was always his greatest source of pride and joy. He is survived by his loving wife, Monique (Rivard) Reed, with whom he shared a life filled with love and adventure. He is also survived by his children: John Reed (wife Kitty) , Elizabeth Reed (wife Bit), Michael Reed (wife Icia), Monique Kotsiopoulos (husband Arthur), and Marguerite Smith (husband Paul). He was the proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren: Austin, Dylan, Alexis, Korina, Vito, Martia, Anna, William, Christopher, Gianna, Wendy, Lianne, and Adrienne. His legacy extends to his great-grandchildren: Aspen, Hudson, Thea, and Artemis.

John was preceded in death by his brothers: Roy Reed (wife Sally) and Chris Reed (wife MaryAnn). He is survived by his brothers, Robert Reed (wife Darlene), Joseph Reed (wife Kathy) and Michael Reed (wife Ann).

John's life was defined by his unwavering commitment to family, country, and the pursuit of knowledge. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and the many lives he touched.

A memorial service will be held in his honor at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of your choice.

So sorry to belatedly hear of John's passing. He was a member of the Central Missouri Astronomical Association for many years and visited us at least once a year until a decade or so ago. First photo is from November 1999 during the Leonids meteor shower. John was observing with us in spite of some serious cold. Second photo shows John at Laws Observatory at his Alma Mater, the University of Missouri. He is using a hand-held laser to give a star tour to several student visitors.

I am sorry to hear of John's passing through the Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston (ATMoB) newsletter. When I worked in the planetarium at the Boston Museum of Science, John was one of my contacts for the ATMoB. He and members of ATMoB came to the Boston Museum of Science and made presentations for the public on Astronomy Day. I last saw him about 13 years ago at an astronomy conference in NJ. He was always upbeat, cheerful and thrilled to get other people interested in astronomy.

Sorry for you loss. He was a very good friend. He helped me with the same telescope he had a Mead DS-16. He will be very missed at the clubhouse.
