John “Jack” Schmitz, age 90, of Imlay City, Michigan died Thursday, October 24, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family. John Gilbert Schmitz was born July 12, 1929 in Detroit, MI. He is the son of the late Martin and the late Julia (Rung) Schmitz. Jack grew up in Detroit, by the Michigan State Fairgrounds area. He attended school in Detroit. Jack married Iris Ann Standish on September 15, 1956 in Detroit, Michigan. He and Iris moved to the Imlay City area in 1976 and have lived there since. He was employed as a bricklayer by R.O. Buckland Construction Company in the Detroit Metro area until his retirement. After retirement, Jack operated and owned Schmitz Diary Farm and milked between 40-80 cows. Jack was a member of the Bricklayer’s Union in Detroit. He was a “jack of all trades”. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and especially wood turning projects on his lathe. Jack is survived by: his wife: Iris Schmitz; one daughter: Michelle (James) Young of Imlay City, MI; two sons: John (Sandy) Schmitz of Attica, MI and Matthew Schmitz of Imlay City, MI; one sister: Margaret Gola of Farmington Hills, MI; eight grandchildren; Josh (Rachel) Young, Alissa Young, John (Cindy) Schmitz, Christine Schmitz, Amy (Derek) Lambert, Iris Ann Schmitz, Katie Schmitz, and Isaac Schmitz; and 10 great-grandchildren: Bentlee, Harper, Myles, Noela, Sammy, Lillyann, Tommy, Joey, Lilly, and Greyson. He was preceded in death by; his parents: Martin & Julia Schmitz; and his siblings: Fred Schmitz, Kate Milski, Martin Schmitz, Mildred Buttoff, Raymond Schmitz, Joseph Schmitz, Andy Schmitz, Rose Chodynicki, Rita Adkins, and an infant sibling. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is being planned for a later date. Arrangements were made by Muir Brothers Funeral Home, 225 N. Main Street, Imlay City, MI.
