John Tiley was to me the epitome of who a law professor ought to be. He was a delightful, brilliant man who will be missed tremendously by the tax community. It was an honor to have known him and I regret that I did not have the pleasure of being one of his students. My fondest memory of John is from the European Association of Tax Law Professors' annual meeting that he hosted at Cambridge in 2008. He was the quintessential host and went above and beyond to share the special treasures of Cambridge with his guests. John Tiley was a treasure; one of those rare and special people who have graced this profession. My sincerest condolences to his family.

What a great loss to UK academia... I've known and admired Professor Tiley for a few years now. He was always very helpful and encouraging - a true mentor to all younger academics that crossed his path. My condolences to the family ... RIP Professor, you will be greatly missed.

I had known John for over 30 years. I was inspired by him and he encouraged me in my academic career at Southampton. I cannot imagine conferences, or Cambridge, without him. He was a dear friend: may his wisdom live on and may he rest in peace.

I Googled John a few minutes ago, as a friend asked if I knew anyone who taught law at Cambridge. I wasn't one of his students, but knew him some 30 years ago as the publisher of his revenue law text. This is such a shock. My thoughts go out to Jillinda.

I am shocked. He was a good friend, inspiring and admired. It is just three weeks that had a wonderful time together in Lisbon. I want to say Jilinda how I feel with her.

John was a colleague whom I greatly admired and liked. He was the person chiefly responsible for hiring me in 1994, and he was commendably supportive of new members of the Law Faculty. I will miss him.

I am so sad to hear of Professor Tiley's death. I had the pleasure of being one of his students in 1988-9, during part of which time he was also Acting President of Queens' College. One of my fondest memories is of having dinner with him and Mrs. Tiley in the President's Lodge, having won this in the Rag Raffle! I also enjoyed meeting him many times on my subsequent visit to Queens', and I know how he will be missed by many. My sincerest condolences to his family, and many friends in Queens' and beyond.

John's unexpected death comes as a great shock to those at the IBFD who have worked with him in the past. We remember with fondness his amicability and enthusiasm for his subject; the international tax world has lost one of its stars. We extend our deepest sympathy to John's family and colleagues. Hubert Hamaekers, Wim Wijnen, Jan de Goede, Joanna Wheeler and IBFD colleagues.
