John Tiley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 1, 2013.
A Queens' College fellow has died after falling from Cambridge University's law faculty.

Police said they were not treating the death of Prof John Tiley, a former chairman of the law faculty, as suspicious.

Prof Tiley, a father-of-three who lived in Huntingdon Road, was regarded as one of the UK's leading experts on tax law and received a CBE for his work in 2003.

He had taught at Cambridge since the 1960s and was also a fellow of the British Academy and an honorary QC. Following his retirement, he remained emeritus professor of the law of taxation.

Prof Eilis Ferran, the current chairman of the law faculty, said Prof Tiley was an "exceptionally distinguished scholar".

She told the News: ""He was an outstanding chairman of the law faculty during a key period in its recent history when it moved to its current home on the Sidgwick site and he was continuing to publish and teach after his retirement, right up to his death.

""He was very widely admired by everyone and he will be much missed by colleagues here and in his college.""

Prof Tiley had started his academic career at Oxford University in 1963 as a lecturer at Oxford before moving to Birmingham and then, in 1964, Cambridge.

He had been a Queens' fellow since 1967, and was the college's vice-president for eight years from 1988.

Christina Sweeney-Baird, 20, vice-president of the Cambridge University Law Society, said Prof Tiley was "hugely admired".

The first-year law student at Magdalene College said: "Prof John Tiley was hugely admired and respected by his students and colleagues.

"I'm very sad to hear of his passing and he will be greatly missed by everyone he taught."

A university spokesman described Prof Tiley's death as "unexpected and tragic".

He said: "The university extends deepest sympathy to his widow and children."

John Tiley was to me the epitome of who a law professor ought to be. He was a delightful, brilliant man who will be missed tremendously by the tax community. It was an honor to have known him and I regret that I did not have the pleasure of being one of his students. My fondest memory of John is from the European Association of Tax Law Professors' annual meeting that he hosted at Cambridge in 2008. He was the quintessential host and went above and beyond to share the special treasures of Cambridge with his guests. John Tiley was a treasure; one of those rare and special people who have graced this profession. My sincerest condolences to his family.

What a great loss to UK academia... I've known and admired Professor Tiley for a few years now. He was always very helpful and encouraging - a true mentor to all younger academics that crossed his path. My condolences to the family ... RIP Professor, you will be greatly missed.

I had known John for over 30 years. I was inspired by him and he encouraged me in my academic career at Southampton. I cannot imagine conferences, or Cambridge, without him. He was a dear friend: may his wisdom live on and may he rest in peace.

I Googled John a few minutes ago, as a friend asked if I knew anyone who taught law at Cambridge. I wasn't one of his students, but knew him some 30 years ago as the publisher of his revenue law text. This is such a shock. My thoughts go out to Jillinda.

I am shocked. He was a good friend, inspiring and admired. It is just three weeks that had a wonderful time together in Lisbon. I want to say Jilinda how I feel with her.

I am so sad to hear of Professor Tiley's death. I had the pleasure of being one of his students in 1988-9, during part of which time he was also Acting President of Queens' College. One of my fondest memories is of having dinner with him and Mrs. Tiley in the President's Lodge, having won this in the Rag Raffle! I also enjoyed meeting him many times on my subsequent visit to Queens', and I know how he will be missed by many. My sincerest condolences to his family, and many friends in Queens' and beyond.
