John Elzworth Unger, 90, of rural Wabash, Indiana, died at 2:45 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born April 11, 1918 in Wabash County, Indiana to Hiram E. "Elza" and Clossie (Cook) Unger. Mr. Unger was a 1936 graduate of Linlawn High School. He married Marcella N. Niccum in Richmond, Indiana on October 9, 1938; she died March 19, 1997. He was a retired farmer and lived on the family farm his entire life. John was a member of the Wabash County Farm Bureau. He served on the Richvalley Elevator Board of Directors 9 years and was a former County President of the Farmers Union. He is survived by his daughter, Joyce (Richard) Hixson of Sacramento, California; two sons, Sam J. (Deanna) Unger of Wabash, and Dr. M.A. "Jan" (Shukria) Akbary of East Hanover, New Jersey; eight grandchildren, Todd Unger, Doug Unger, and Tricia Unger, all of Wabash, Marcy (Lance) Vayder of Sacramento, Ricky Hixson of Woodland, California, Lisa (Steve) Weissert of Bourbon, Indiana, Erin (David) Slack of Indianapolis, and Sean (Natalie) Unger of Wabash; ten great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, John Nathan Unger, who died July 31, 2004, his brother, Kenneth Unger, and his sister, Ruth Albaugh. Funeral services will be held at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Avenue, Wabash, on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Forrest Bowers officiating. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, March 24 at the funeral home. Preferred memorial is American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
