John Wallin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 3, 2023.
John David Wallin, MD, 85, of The Woodlands, Texas, died peacefully at his home with his loving wife and bulldog at his side. John, known by most as David, was born to Nathaniel and Florence Wallin in Pasadena, CA. He grew up in Pacific Palisades, CA, and after graduating from Santa Monica HS, he went on to graduate from Stanford ('59) and then Yale Medical School ('63). David then began a thirty-two year career as a Naval Medical Officer. He retired at the rank of Captain after twenty-two years of active duty. His career path took him into academic medicine as a Professor of Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He served as head of Nephrology at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans for ten years, and the same for ten years at Louisiana State University Medical School. He enjoyed contributing to the education of medical students, house staff and especially his fellows. David authored greater than three hundred publications in the medical literature, largely in the area of hypertension research. Retiring in 1999, David and wife Carolyn moved to the home they built on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, to enjoy his life-long love for golf, fishing, cooking, travel and gardening. For five years, David and Carolyn wrote a column on organic gardening for the Tahoe World newspaper. In 2005, they relocated to the Texas Hill Country and built a beautiful home on twenty-seven acres overlooking Kerrville. They continued their organic gardening column, writing for the Kerrville Daily Times until 2017 when they downsized to their townhouse in The Woodlands. David was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Wallin. He is survived by his golfing partner, fishing buddy, sous chef, colleague, best friend, wife, Carolyn Pearce, MD, of the Woodlands, TX. David is survived by his son, John Wallin, Jr. and wife Ruth Hamerton-Kelly of Lake Oswego, OR, and grandchildren Patrick, Sarah and Anna Wallin. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Wallin and husband Winston Berger of Richmond, CA. He is survived by previous spouse, and mother of his children, Karen Wallin of Lake Oswego, OR. He is also survived by sister-in-law Colleen Wallin of San Anselmo, CA, sister- and brother-in law Julie and Fred Altenau of Dallas, TX, several nieces and nephews and bulldog Pippin. No services. David would suggest that you save your money and buy Berkshire.

David, may you rest in peace. You are a testament to someone who lived a full life! A brilliant man I was proud to have as my brother in law.

I´m so saddened by this. His dry sense of humor and straight forward responses I loved. His meals were so very tasty. He will be missed....
