John Whalen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 5, 2018.
John was born in Yonkers, NY to John J. Whalen who was the former mayor of Yonkers and Mina B. ElmoreWhalen. He was married to Florence McKee Whalen for 30 years.
He was much more than a "step" father to Kevin McInerney and wife Jen of Pleasentville, NY and Lauren Bailey and husband Todd of Burlington VT. He had three grandsons, Aiden, Sean and Daniel McInerney. He loved planning family vacations that included his nephew, Brendan Bard his wife Kelly and their sons, Ryan and Colin.

Barron, as he was known, graduated from Gorton HS where he was all city football (guard). He served in the United States Navy from 1960-1964 aboard the USS Boston. He graduated from the American Academy of Funeral Services. He took over the Whalen Funeral Home and served as president. Whalen Funeral Home merged with Ball to become The Whalen and Ball Funeral Home.

Barron served as the County Legislator from 1973-1975 and served on the Yonkers zoning board from 1971-1973. He also served as chairman of the Yonkers Parking Authority from 1975-1980. He was a member of the Yonkers Kiwanis Club, Friendly sons of St. Patrick in Westchester County and a 30 year member of Wykagyle Country Club. One of the highlights of his volunteer service was coaching girls basketball. He coached at both Christ the King and Sacred Heart. He long after talked about how much he enjoyed this.
Barron retired in 1996 to Jonathan's Landing in Jupiter, FL. He enjoyed golfing and having a weekly lunch with his golfing friends. He enjoyed taking golf trips to Ireland, Alaskan cruises with his friends and then later a family trip. He and Florence spent their summers in Manchester, VT where he was a member of Dorset Field Club. He was a generous person who laughed easily.

Any donations can be made in his name to St. Judes Hospital.
