John WILSON Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Oct. 8 to Oct. 17, 2014.

WILSON, John Reynolds "Jack"
John Reynolds Wilson, known as Jack (June 27, 1927 - Sept 22, 2014), was born in Trail BC to Reverend Alfred and Edith Wilson, and passed away at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital at the age of 87. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Ronald, Leslie and sister Christine Parks. He is survived by his loving wife Elaine, his son David (Lindsey), his cherished granddaughter Kylah, his sisters-in-law Elsie and Gladys; Cheryl and Curtis, as well as many special extended family members. Jack graduated from UBC with a BA in Physics and Math (1949) and a Diploma in Education (1950). He then taught High School Math and Sciences in Prince Rupert (where he met his future wife, Elaine) for two years before moving to Calgary. Jack began his Exploration career with Western Geophysical in 1952, was then with Farney Exploration in 1955 until joining with John A. Legge. Upon his retirement, Jack and Robert Comer created the Geophysical consulting firm of Comer and Wilson. He was a lifetime member of both CSEG and APEGA; he enjoyed his work as a Geophysicist very much, continuing to see clients into his seventies. He was a member of the Petroleum Club, North Hill Curling Club and Willow Park Golf Club. For 30 seasons Jack particularly enjoyed attending the Doodlebug Golf Tournaments at the Banff Springs Hotel and Golf Course. In his retirement years he enjoyed crossword puzzles, making models, double-skunking his wife and son at crib, time at the cabin in Qualicum, and learning (again) to play the violin. He also enjoyed volunteering at an elementary school, assisting the students with their reading skills. Jack is remembered for his gentle demeanour, subtle humour and his love for tall ships, vintage fighter planes, steam engines, golf, curling and music. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kiwanis Music Festival, the Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice. In living memory of Jack Wilson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

My father-in-law, Harold Farney, and my husband, Don Farney, mentioned many, many times how grateful they were for the talent and professional contributions Jack Wilson made to Farney Exploration. They, and I am sure all of Jack's colleagues, were forever respectful of Jack's in-depth knowledge of the oil patch and the way in which he dispensed that knowledge. Jack was a first class gentleman and I know he will be missed.

Jack was a lovely fellow, good neighbour, and excellent snow-shoveller! We shall miss him on 47th Avenue.
