John Woodward Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 31, 2023.
It is with deepest regret that we announce the passing of John Phillip Woodward of Snow Lake Shores, Ashland, Mississippi on Thursday August 24, 2023 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis Tennessee. He is succeeded by his wife Susan Frommel Woodward of Snow Lake Shores, son Paul Woodward (Rocell) of Skye, Scotland, daughter Sarah Woodward (Dave) of Wallington, England and 6 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was born in Queen Charlottes Hospital , London England on June 5, 1945 son of the late Leonard and Kathleen Graham Woodward. He joined his brother Len and late sister June in a partially destroyed city and in a country that was bloodied but unbowed and in deep austerity.

He attended the British public school system finishing his studies in 1963. He had the good fortune to grow up in the Rock and Roll era (The Who, The Beatles and all that) which helped his development of a positive attitude and ability to be "Hail fellow, well met" to everybody he came in contact with. Those characteristics stayed with him throughout his life.

He worked primarily in construction in the London area until he and his first wife accepted an offer to emigrate and join his brother Len and wife Beverly in the United States. He arrived in May 1972 and the family shortly thereafter.

Career wise he followed the not untypical immigrants route of trying several options until he found one which suited him to a tee. He became a sales representative for Snap-On Tools until retirement in 2006 winning numerous awards for salesmanship during his career.

On retirement he and Susan moved from Memphis to Snow Lake Shores. They traveled extensively and particularly enjoyed winters in Texas. John had a great sense of humor and the ability to make friend wherever he went. He will be sorely missed by relatives and friends alike.

At John's request his body was donated to Genesis Foundation for Science and Research.

A Celebration of Life will be on October 14 at 2:00 pm at the Snow Lake Community Center.

Dad,

It's now a month since you left this world. You were too young to die, but you will live on forever in my heart and soul and in all of the wonderful memories of our time spent together.

You went through your life drawing people to you, you had this energy that shone through and you made some amazing friendships along your way. It's because you were selfless and you were genuinely interested in people and their life stories. I have always admired that about you and so proud to call you mine.

You were the most gentle and kind father who really did his best and I know how much you loved me. I know how very special it was to be with you that night a month ago - to be able to hold you close and tell you how much I love you.

I can see your twinkling eyes smiling at me everyday Dad.

I miss you and I always will until the time that we meet again.

I hope that you have alot of fun finding your treasure Dad.

Love,
Sarah xxx

Woodward family, our prayers are with during this difficult time. My relationship with John started with business and after the first visit it was as if we had know each other for years. He delighted in seeing my suba diving pictures and I loved his stories about his travels. Early on, he tried to teach me the rules of rugby.. sorry John I was a slow learner. During the pandemic our visits turned to telephone and emails. He always had an adventure to share. Rest in Peace my friend.

We met at the dog park at Bentsen Grove Resort in Palmview, Tx. We enjoyed a our daily conversations while our dogs played. John always said Bella (our dog who barked all the way to the park) woke him from his nap and let him know it was time to go to the doggie park. We will miss him. Floyd and Marilyn Bradley.

John,
I remember well the first time I ever met you when we came to Memphis to see Susan and family.
You welcomed us in as family and wound up being family.
I think often about our friendship and visit to see you in Snow Lake.
I often think of our trip to LaVeta, Colorado to spend some time with you and Susan, our trip to the Great Sand Dunes and Cuchara.
You are and were a man among men.
Nancy and I will deeply miss you!
