Jon Shirek Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 29, 2025.
Jon Shirek, veteran Atlanta television reporter, died peacefully April 14, 2025, from complications of brain cancer. Beloved husband of Nancy Nydam Shirek, Jon was 73.

Jon was born in Fargo, ND, and grew up there and in Melbourne Beach, Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, then worked at WTLV-TV in Jacksonville.

From there he moved to Atlanta and WXIA-TV 11Alive News, reporting for 43 years about people and events and issues defining our times and affecting our futures. His Emmy award winning stories and sonorous voice earned him the newsroom nickname The Poet.

Jon's abiding curiosity made him the perfect journalist, photographer, and a world traveler. Jon was a Beatles fan extraordinaire. He is noted as a famous customer at Atlanta's The Silver Skillet restaurant.

Honoring his memory are his sister Barbara Shirek Fowler (Skip) and his brother Ken Shirek (Paula) of Orlando and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who delighted in the attention he paid them. Jon was a beloved member of Nancy's family in Michigan and Maryland. He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Ruth Shirek of Orlando.

A memorial service will be held May 4 at 4 pm at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Piedmont Foundation, Orr Brain Tumor Fund http://give.piedmont.org/jonshirek
