Jonathan Reiss Charleston - Jonathan Reiss died Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He grew up in Queens, New York, graduated from Princeton and studied molecular biology at Emory University. He is survived by his remarkable wife and soulmate, Suellen. Their journey together was one of joy, growth, discovery and love...so much love! All who knew Jonathan knew his enormous heart and expansive mind. No one loved more deeply and steadfastly than Jonathan. He was a champion to those in need, he was passionate and compassionate. All creatures great and small were drawn to Jonathan and his limitless kindness, especially his cats, Birdie, Twitch, Lyric, and Scruffie. He was thoughtful, spiritual, transcendent and powerful. He was a trained scientist and was quietly brilliant. He was a talented photographer who captured and embraced the value and beauty in everyone and everything. He loved playing chess, and he loved the Mets, whether they won or lost. But most of all, he loved Suellen and cherished their life together. Jonathan is also survived by his father, Stanley Reiss, his sister, Holly Reiss, his cousins, Nina Osborne and Robert Silvestro, the entire Hawkins family, and countless friends around the world. There will be a celebration of his life 2:00 PM Saturday, June 18, 2022 at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy., Charleston, SC. The service will be live-streamed, and a link will be posted to www.CharlestonFunerals.com. Donations may be made to Pet Helpers or the animal rescue of your choice. Arrangements by James A. Suellen, I was so sorry to learn of the loss of your spouse. Although, I never had the opportunity to meet Jonathan, by all accounts he was a remarkable man. I can only imagine what amazing years you spent together, and I am sorry to have lost touch. Please take care of yourself and know that I often think of you and the wonderful times in Charleston.

Losing Jonathan is a terrible decrease in the love contained in our universe. I was so fortunate to be his friend for many years while I was in college and we were in grad school together at Emory. Some of my happiest memories are of our late nights at coffee shops brainstorming about experiments or results, or going out for bagels in the morning before lab. Those were wonderful years listening to Jonathan´s huge LP collection and watching the fish in his salt water tank. Of all the people I´ve met, only Jonathan would intently listen to what a person would say, and engage them in a long thoughtful conversation, and truly have interest in that person, not pushing his own agenda. I could always count on him for good advice, even in times I had made dreadful decisions. I think the two greatest gifts Jonathan passed to me were a deep love for animals (he always said they teach us about unconditional love), and a passion for the music of Pat Metheny. We saw so many concerts together and listened to Pat´s albums over and over, music that could be uplifting, melancholy, jarring... just as life is. Unfortunately I´d fallen out of touch with Jonathan for the last several years and the last time I saw him and Suellen was after a Pat show in Atlanta. Learning of his illness and passing has made me and my wife so deeply sad that life has a dullness and heaviness now. Losing a person you love is terribly difficult without support from family, friends or religion, which are somewhat sparse right now. Perhaps the perspective of Carlos Castaneda has value: almost all of us have our awareness devoured by the Eagle in the end, but Jonathan was so intelligent and enlightened that I hope he was able to dart past, and escape into infinity.

Jonathan was an amazingly kind, caring and interesting person we were fortunate to get to spend a lot of time with during our time in Charleston. We miss him dearly and I miss our chess games to keep me sane during the pandemic. Our love to Suellen and the rest of the Hawkins family

Jonathan was smart and exceedingly kind. He knew how to be a friend and always spent time finding out what was important to you. His intelligence was obvious to anyone who met him as well as his love of good food and times.
I will miss him dearly.

I couldn´t describe Jonathan any better than this beautiful and touching memorial. Fortunate are those, animal and human, that were part of Jonathan´s life. He will be greatly and dearly missed by all who knew him.
