Joseph Cornelius,

Joseph "Joe" Cornelius Jr., 89, passed away on February 4, 2025, in Akron, Ohio.

Born on July 29, 1935, in Spokane, Washington, Joe pursued higher education at Georgia Tech, earning a degree in chemical engineering. He was a proud member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Following graduation, he married Jennie Finley Farrior of Tampa and began his 30 year career at Firestone Tire and Rubber in Akron. There he served as the Research and Development Manager specializing in natural latex. His team's contributions to the industry resulted in numerous patents.

Beyond his professional achievements, Joe was actively involved in various organizations. In Akron, he enjoyed participating in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, particularly through their sponsorship of the International Soap Box Derby World Championships.

After retiring in 1982, Joe divided his time between Silver Lake, Ohio and Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida, spending summers with his son and grandchildren and winters with his sister and daughter. He remained dedicated to community service as an active Director of the Joseph F. Cornelius Family Foundation, Inc., recently transitioning to an Ex Officio role supporting meaningful initiatives.

Faith was an important part of Joe's life. He was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Clearwater, as were his parents and sister.

Joe is predeceased by his parents, Joseph F. Cornelius Sr. and Mirth Cornelius of Clearwater. He is survived by his daughter, Jan Cornelius of Tampa; son, Jay Cornelius; daughter-in-law, Joann; three grandchildren, Emily, Tara, and Rigel; and his sister, Karen Crown.

A service will be held at the Episcopal Church of Ascension, 701 Orange Ave, Clearwater, FL 33756 on March 29 at 1 p.m.
