Joseph Flagg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 19, 2010.
FALMOUTH — Joseph Flagg died of a stroke on February 13, 2010, at the age of 82. He leaves his wife of 45 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Flagg.

Joseph and Betty first came to Falmouth as summer residents in 1968 and in 1985 they retired to the Cape. They bought a home on Eel River Road which was not too far from Green Pond where Joseph kept his sailboat for 30 years. In 2004 they moved to town because of his poor health and have lived on Lake Leaman Road since that time.

Earlier, the couple had lived their married years in Acton. Joseph had grown up in the Boston area and was graduated from Watertown High School in 1944. Instead of going to college in September as planned, the 17-year-old found himself at Boot Camp that July. As he liked to describe it, Uncle Sam was really scraping the bottom of the barrel by then. Two years later he was discharged but had to retake his SAT's before MIT would reinstate him.

While in college, his favorite extra curricular activities were sailing and flying. One of the sailing high points was having his name engraved as Boatswain on MIT's pavilion wall. He spent his summer weekends crewing on racing yachts at Marblehead.

Joseph enjoyed sailing, but loved flying even more. After being active in the MIT Flying Club, he accrued 500 plus hours and set his sights on becoming a commercial pilot but failed the physical because of color blindness.

He graduated in 1951 and settled on an engineering career and spent the majority of those years at Raytheon's Missile Plant in Andover.

A memorial service will be announced later this spring after friends return from Florida.

Donations in Joseph's memory may be made to the Falmouth Service Center, P.O. Box 208, Falmouth, MA 02541.
