Joseph Gaschler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 25, 2025.
Joseph Barry Gaschler was born on January 19, 1945, in Chicago, IL. He grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, alongside his brothers William (Carla) Gaschler and Jack (Margie) Gaschler, and his sister Peggy Gaschler (Lloyd) Fincham.

Joe married the "Sunshine" of his life, Eileen Wetzel Gaschler. Although they faced challenges in their relationship, they remained close and loyal to one another for over 60 years. Together, they had two children: Candace (Rick) Fanzo and Kim Wiery (Kevin Syfert). Joe was also a proud grandfather to Nathan Wiery, Niko Fatimus, and Louis Joseph Fatimus.

Throughout his life, Joe thrived on excitement and challenges. He worked for General Motors as a foreman and later as a general foreman before starting his own business, repairing oil rigs off the coast of Port Hueneme, CA, which he considered his paradise home. After a debilitating work injury on an offshore rig, Joe was forced to close "Gash Oil Rigging" and retire. Unsatisfied with retirement, he began working at Bill's Place in Austintown, OH, eventually managing it. Still seeking new challenges, he purchased the old Dew Drop Inn in Lake Milton and opened Shillings Mill Tavern, which he owned and operated for over 15 years.

Joe had a passion for motorcycles, cars, motorhomes, inventing, and connecting with people. A true survivor, Joe bravely battled Parkinson's Disease for over 25 years until his passing in June 2025. Joe was dedicated to providing for his family, working tirelessly to ensure their well-being both during his life and after his passing. He also showed a strong commitment to helping others. His final selfless act was donating his brain for Parkinson's research in conjunction with UCLA Medical Center, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in this important area.

A private family celebration of life will be held in his honor. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the wonderful nurses, aides, and dietary staff at Omni West, particularly his dedicated nurses Bonnie and Debbie (affectionately known as Nurse Ratched).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable contributions in memory to Joe Gaschler to be made to Brain Support Network www.brainsupportnetwork.org
