Joseph Hannigan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 2, 2022.
Joseph Brian Hannigan (Age 76)

Brian Hannigan of Arlington, Virginia passed away peacefully on May 21, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Judy Sullivan, son Connor (Jennie Grimes), daughter Megan (Coulter Minix), and precious grandson Rory Dunn Minix. He also leaves behind numerous other beloved family and enduring friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Hannigan, mother, Gertrude Dunn Hannigan, sister Elin Crowley, and nephew John Michael Crowley.

Born in New York City on November 27, 1945, Brian was raised in Wakefield, Rhode Island and found his love of the water on Narragansett Beach. For the rest of his life he refused to pass up any opportunity to bodysurf a wave. While at South Kingston High School he made lifelong friends and often reminisced about his high school basketball days. He later attended Saint Thomas More School in New Hampshire where he developed his gift for writing. Brian went on to Saint Louis University (SLU), becoming President of SLU's Young Democrats and Chair of the College Democrats of Missouri. His political awakening in college coincided with the start of becoming a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Brian's work in college as the chair of the Robert F. Kennedy for President club launched a career in Democratic political campaigns. He eventually became the Scheduling and Advance Director for the Governor of Illinois in Springfield. Throughout his life, no higher complement could be paid than referring to him as a 'great advance man'. He met his future wife on a double date in Chicago, Illinois. They threw dance parties, traveled to many countries, and watched foreign films. Later they moved to Washington, D.C. and Brian eventually became the Deputy National Finance Director for the Democratic National Committee. A great advance man with an encyclopedic memory and attention to details, Brian served on advance teams for President Carter's visit to Israel in 1979 and President Clinton's visit to Northern Ireland in 1995.

Brian's career went on to include communications and government relations. He worked to bring Major League Baseball to the D.C. area as Communications Director for the Virginia Baseball Stadium Authority until the Nationals arrived. He then began serving in Governor Mark Warner's administration in Virginia. Brian ended his career in government relations at Smith, Dawson, & Andrews where he cherished working with his longtime friends.

Brian believed in fighting for fairness above all, whether on national political campaigns or in his own neighborhood. He served as President of the Dominion Hills Civic Association for over 20 years. A believer in the positive impact of youth sports, he became the Chairman of the Arlington County Sports Commission, President of the Better Sports Club, and would often drive around Arlington every weekend to make sure his children's teammates could attend practices and games. Brian became a youth and high school soccer and basketball referee later in life, continuing well into his seventies, and found great joy in calling things as he saw them.

Brian loved life and could be found 'dancing like no one was watching' at many family weddings, looking for any excuse to go on a road trip, or belting out lyrics to songs by The Rolling Stones. He is loved dearly.

A memorial service will be held at Arlington Community Church (6040 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA 22205) at 1pm on Saturday, June 11. A reception for family and friends will follow at the family's home in Arlington. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/PFFTribute/BrianHannigan)

Brian and I met through an introduction from Larry Hughes in South Bend, Indiana in 1976. The good times began there and continued in Boston, D.C. ,Virginia and Narragansett, R.I. Brian and Judy's gracious hospitality introduced my family to this wonderful vacation land where Brian lived in his early years. We walked the streets of 'Gansett as he reminisced about people and events that made lasting impressions. Now my family has many of the same fond memories. We will all stand and toast Brian on the roof deck of the US Coast Guard station/restaurant for all he shared with us....

Dear Judy, Connor, and Megan

My son Matt just shared the news, and words can´t express my thoughts in an appropriate way that are deserving of such a special man, husband, father and grandfather. His zest for family, his work, sports, and life was rare. Few people truly understand how to be a husband and dad, and he was among the best.

We worked and coached together and he refereed in many basketball games I coached. Honestly he made me a better person.

Both Connor and I know his commitment to Arlington, Falls Church, and Yorktown soccer, but Megan I hope you know how much he loved watching you and talked about you all the time.

Judy there was never a practice, game, or day that went by where his love and devotion to you wasn´t expressed.

My life, and I am sure those of many in the metro DC area, is not only richer, but extremely blessed by knowing and working with your dad and husband.

God Bless each of you, and may Brian Requiescant in Pace

Bilikens forever

A life time of passion has left the memory of Brian on all who were fortunate to have crossed his path. Most important, his life built with Judy, Connor and Megan. In time, be healed by the many joy filled shared events
and fill yourselves with love and laughter. He´d wish nothing more. He will be greatly missed.

My heart was broken by this loss. I dreamed that we would have a chance to meet again, dreamed that I would introduce you to my parents. You were a person with big heart. I always smile when I remember your detailed instructions about everything for me: how to get the bus, how to find interesting places. I will always remember our celebration after governer's election and your excursion for me to Pentagon. It was always interesting to discuss different topics with you. And sure, you were the person who taught me to do my first hand-made Jack-o'-lantern :)) thank you for these memories, my friend! Rest in peace.

Where do I start?! It absolutely broke my heart when I was at my parent's house last weekend and saw a note they are still writing to Judy expressing their condolences. The words are just tough to come by. It warmed my heart to know that you were able to see your grandson. I am glad you are at peace and no longer suffering. I have many great memories of you talking about sports as we often do in this family. You were a good man, and made the most of your time here. You have sowed many seeds and while you may not be here physically anymore, your impact on this world will still be felt for years to come. Your wife likes to say we are rich in family, and that certainly applied to you as well. Congratulations on winning at the game of life my friend, you did it right!!

I am so sorry for your loss. Brian was a lifelong friend of my older brother. As the younger sister he always took time to talk with me asking me how I was and what was going on in my life. This continued right up to the last time I saw him at Sandy and Janet´s 50 th anniversary party. He was a nice person who will be missed by many.

A fun partner to work with whether refereeing soccer or basketball. He always had an interesting story but when it was time to get down to business, he dedicated his efforts to each game as if it were the players´ last, yet kept it all in perspective.

I am shocked to learn of Brian´s passing. We had a long visit in 2020 when he was being evaluated at National Jewish Hospital. We worked together on Dan Walker´s campaign in 1972 and during the State Government years in Springfield. We´ve stayed in touch over the years. He stayed in touch with so many Walker people. Catching up with Brian always included news about so many others. Received Christmas cards over the years and got to see the kids growing up. Judy, Connor and Megan, know that through your grief, Brian leaves a powerful legacy of caring, humor, intelligence and commitment to many just causes.

Back in 1966, when I was very pregnant with my first child, I was Brian's freshman comp English teacher at St. Louis University. It was the age of miniskirts, I am short, and I always feared that Brian might tell me just how I looked from behind as I wrote on the blackboard. Like him, I did a spell in Springfield, Illinois. But our paths did not cross again until recent years, when we reacquainted like old friends at the home of fellow St. Louis U grad Don Foley and Louise Hilsen. Last Christmas, looking like a changed man, Brian told me his news, and that has doubled his hold on my heart. Surely his spirit will sparkle in the vast universe.

Good bye Brian. We will miss you and one day hope to join you in that special place for wonderful human beings. You were a role model for what it means to be a husband, a father, an activist, a friend, a believer, a neighbor, and for so many more categories of what makes a man truly special. Our world was lucky to have you and we were fortunate to know you. I´ll miss our conversations, our special moments where your sarcasm about the Sullivan clan was free to fly, and our disputes about referee calls - which I primarily used just to get under your skin. Love you. Thanks for being a part of our lives.

I´ve known Brian sine his St Louis U days. Over the years Brian and I would share a beer and talk politics and SLU whenever he got back to Illinois. My condolences to his family . Brian was what you call a stand up guy. I will surely miss his sharp wit, his wonder ability to listen and our talks about foggy bottom. Again to his family, I am so sorry for your loss

This hits hard-- what a generous and capable soul! Though we attended Thomas More at different times, I was fortunate to get to know him as organizer of a recent reunion, but a couple of years ago. His generosity of spirit and his many efforts to better the world through political action that did not carry the rancor, so common today of us versus them partisan enmity, will be sorely missed.
