Joseph Hurley Jr. Obituary
A veteran of the US Navy, Joe attained the rank of Sonar Technician Submarine First Class. Joe served aboard the USS Daniel Webster, the USS Woodrow Wilson and the USS George Washington Carver. Following his discharge, Joe was a single father who made his focus raising and spending time with his daughter. He loved live music, the beach, fishing, going out on his boat, and taking spur-of-the-moment road trips. Joe was also an excellent gardener and avid reader of horror fiction.
In his later years, Joe lived in Salem Massachusetts, and made some of his closest friends seeing bands play at local venues. Joe was also a great storyteller with an excellent sense of humor.
Joe leaves behind his daughter, Kaitlin Hurley and son-in-law DJ Burgess; 4 siblings and their significant others - Jay Hurley and partner Michael Souza, Judy Hurley and wife Karen Heil, John Hurley, and Jill Hurley and partner Bob Celluci; 5 nieces and nephews; Johnny and fiancée Tyler Catanella, Maegan Hurley, Rianne Hurley and partner Michael Morgado, Phillip Hurley, and Sudha Hurley-Heil. And last, but not least, his loving and loyal dog, Rita.
A Celebration of Life for Joe will take place at the Salem MA VFW (Witch City Post #1524) located at 95 Derby St, Salem, MA 01970 on Saturday, July 30th from 1-4PM. All are welcome to attend at any point during that time. We will be offering an open mic for music or to share stories and memories about Joe. Dress comfortable and casual as black attire is not required.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Neurointestinal Health Center at Mass General Hospital.

(Joey) Joe Hurley was a wonderful dad to our beautiful daughter Kaitlin. A line from a Paul Simon song says it so well, "There has never been a father who loves his daughter more than I love you...." Even though he missed her birth by six days, once the USS George Washington Carver surfaced from the ocean, he boarded a plane at Heathrow Airport in Scotland and flew into JFK, then rented a car to drive to Voluntown,CT at three am, to meet his beloved daughter. She is our greatest gift. There were sad times when he would have to leave us for three plus months at a time. He is to be recognized and thanked for his service to our country. When I lived in Falmouth or Chatham, he would drop her off and pick her up, never halfway. My condolences go out to the entire Hurley family. I'm sure he was comforted by knowing Kat is with DJ, showing one another love, patience, kindness and respect. Shout out to DJ for the love and support to Kat. Love you always Joey, rest in peace.

On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at
Joe´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Daniel Webster, the USS Woodrow Wilson and the USS George Washington Carver.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
