Joseph Legueri Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 24, 2025.
Joseph Angelo Legueri peacefully left this world on October 9, 2025, after living his 81 years of life on this earth to the fullest. Through his Alzheimer's journey, he never lost his sense of humor or love for Vi's Pizza and a good ice cream cone.

Joe touched many lives through his work. He started his teaching career at Duluth Cathedral in 1967 and retired after a memorable teaching career at Biwabik and Mesabi East in 2001. If you sometimes find yourself saying, "The heck you say," then you had Joe as a teacher!

In 1962, Joe charmed a beautiful and lovely woman from Calumet while driving the after-school activity bus. Shirley and Joe were married 58 years. During this time, they built a house in the woods and had many adventures with their two children, Tony and Gina Haggard.

Joe spent many an hour helping his grandchildren, Thomas, Cooper, and Kelsie, know the proper way to be silly and know they were loved.

Joe was the only son of Dorothy and Angelo Legueri of Nashwauk. He had a knack for aggravating and loving his four sisters: Patti Williams, Jeannie Sunnarborg, Margie Legueri, and Marianne Cable. He was a man of many talents: he built the home he raised his family in, tinkered with many autos-his pride being a 1948 Studebaker-and was a prolific writer.

There will be no somber service, no flowery speeches, and no organ music. Instead, the family invites friends to raise a glass, tell a story that may or may not be true, and laugh a little too loudly-because that's exactly how Joe lived.

Mr. Legueri was a mentor to me. He was there during a difficult family situation. He was always positive and every student had high respect for him. He hand wrote his own English assignments and then copied them. He's the only one who could make you feel good about getting an F; I was terrible at literature. And yet somehow, he managed to talk me into taking his AP English class even though I was a poor English student and thought it was a crazy idea. His class saved me during my years in college, and ironically, I ended up majoring in English! That likely would've never happened if he wasn't in my path. He had a special gift. So many students were fortunate to have crossed paths with him.

So sorry for Joe´s family. He will be missed by so many. What a wonderful legacy of memories he leaves for all of us who were fortunate enough to have him as a teacher. Joe, you were always there for us and our children with those extra steps you willingly and happily took to assure best outcomes. You´ve earned your wings.

I was lucky enough to be a student of Mr. Leguri. And years later, he came into the store I work at. After that, he would go out of his way, to make sure he came in to say hi.

Remember the quizzes? A, B, C ?
He gave the quizzes to research each students' grammar, spelling, punctuation. He then tailored lessons for each student. He was meant to be a mentor. We at Bi-Hi were so fortunate. I'm sure so many former students feel the same. The heck you say?

Sympathies to Shirley and the family. Joe was a wonderful teacher, mentor, and friend. He knew every student, their quirks, and how to challenge them to dig even deeper. We would often go to class early simply to spend more time with him. He and Shirley make a mean pizza roll spread and made you feel like the most interesting people in the world when you went to visit. He will be dearly missed and made such an impact on so many.

A wonderful teacher. A wonderful neighbor. He touched so many lives. His light will shine on.
My deepest sympathy to Shirley, family and loved ones.
