JOSEPH MASSARO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 1 to Jan. 3, 2016.
MASSARO JOSEPH ANDREW, Jr.
Surrounded by his family, just as he would have wanted, Joseph Andrew Massaro, Jr., died peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at the age of 79 after a heroic battle with Alzheimer's disease. Joe was born on January 14, 1936 and raised on Larimer Avenue in East Liberty. He was the second son of Mary (Insogna) and Joseph A. Massaro, Sr. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1953, where he played quarterback on the football team. He went on to St. Francis University, where he continued playing quarterback for two years and then transferred to the University of Pittsburgh where he earned a civil engineering degree in 1957. In 1967, he founded Massaro Corporation, one of the region's largest and most respected construction companies. Joe was passionate about his Catholic faith and guided by the strong belief that along with great success comes the great responsibility to give back to the community. He took tremendous pride in serving on the boards of directors of La Roche College, Central Catholic High School, Riverview School District, The Pittsburgh Opera and St. Anthony School for Exceptional Children. While serving as president of the St. Anthony Board, he led the effort to "mainstream" children with developmental disabilities by including them in the classroom with their peers. He was also a generous supporter of many charitable and non-profit organizations, including The Homeless Children's Education Fund, The Multiple Sclerosis Society, The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, The University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, Oakland Catholic High School, Little Sisters of the Poor and St. Vincent College. Although he was the recipient of many awards recognizing his commitment to the community, including the NAIOP Lifetime Achievement award, the University of Pittsburgh Distinguished Alumni award, the Jewish National Fund Tree of Life award and the LA Roche Ad Lucem award, he was most proud of his induction into the Central Catholic High School Hall of Fame. Despite all of his success, he never forgot where he came from or what was most important in life - the love of his family. He is deeply mourned by his devoted and loving wife of 55 years, Carol (Coleman) Massaro; and preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Joseph A. Massaro; and his brothers, Eugene "Gene" and Gerard "Gerry" Massaro. His four children were his most cherished accomplishments, Linda, Joe III (Alina), David (Luci) and Steven "Gooch" (Stephanie). He served as a constant role model and will always be remembered and loved as "Grandpa" by his 15 grandchildren, Steven Studnicky, Alex (Studnicky) Gardella (Chris), Sofia Massaro, Olivia Massaro, Carolyn Cost, Marta Massaro, Josie Cost, Isabella Massaro, Meredith Massaro, Charlie Massaro, Elizabeth Massaro, Lily Massaro, Joseph A. Massaro, Ava Massaro and Charlotte Massaro. Joe was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in January 2010. He confronted the disease with the same passion, humility and pride that had always defined him. In response to the disease, his wife, Carol established the Joseph A. Massaro Alzheimer's Research Fund through the Pittsburgh Foundation in September 2013. To continue his strong commitment to the community he lived in and loved, the aim of the fund is to support Pittsburgh based researchers seeking a cure for Alzheimer's. Family and friends will be received on Sunday, January 3, 2016, from 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue and Devonshire Street (freyvogelfuneralhome.com). Funeral Monday, January 4, 2016, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Bishop David A. Zubik at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul Cathedral, 108 North Dithridge Street, Pittsburgh, PA. A reception will be held immediately following Mass at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association (PAA), 4215 5th Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA. A private entombment will follow the Mass for immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you kindly consider a donation to the Joseph A. Massaro Alzheimer's Fund through the pittsburghfoundation.org.

Joe was a tribute to the family he cherished. When I saw him again, when visiting Pittsburgh after not having seen him since university days 45 years prior, I saw he had not changed from the same elegant, proud, noble person he had always been. His family is fortunate to have had him for so many years. My guess is that he will continue to watch over them; surely part of that is wanting them to be at peace with his passing, because he is in another environment of love.

Carol - I heard of Joe's diagnosis a couple of years ago from a mutual Sister of St. Joseph friend, & recently got the message of his passing. I'm so sorry for your loss & that of your loving children.

Joe & I were old friends way back in his St. Francis College days & I was so glad to hear that he was selected by the SSJ's to build the Villa St. Joseph addition to the Motherhouse in Baden. I fondly remember meeting with him at an event on the grounds in Baden, where he wanted me to meet you. It told me so much about your relationship.

Grief & loss are unwelcome guests into our lives -- I lost my husband to lung cancer 8 years ago -- but I have learned that it's possible to grow in the memories & deeper insights that grief brings. I hope you are comforted by the happy memories you shared & the love of your family.

With prayers,
Loretta (Jo Lombardi)McClintock

Mrs. Massaro, Linda, Steven, Joey and David,
There are no words to express how truly sorry I am for your loss of such a GREAT man, husband, father, grandfather, friend and boss. I had the honor of working for Massaro Corporation starting in 1979. Mr. Massaro is the definition of "professional, perfectionist, genuine, hardworking, honest, and caring" If all companies/bosses could be like him, the world be a better place. He made his employees feel like family ~ He is one of the most generous men ever. Mrs. Massaro, what wonderful children you two raised. Mr. Massaro has touched so many lives ~ his memory will live on forever. Hoping you find comfort in the love of family and friends. Our prayers will be with you.

John and I would like to send our deepest heartfelt sympathy to the entire Massaro family. Carol, you and Joe welcomed us into your heart and home the very first time that we met you, and we will always have the fondest of memories of times shared with you.
If you remember, we asked you to partake in our wedding 36 1/2 years ago...and your entire family were dearly involved in sharing the beginning of our life together....which will never be forgotten.
God Bless you all as you continue your life without Joe, but we are sure that you know that he will always be there with you, through the fondest of memories that are forever in your hearts.

When my father passed away from Alzheimer's, someone described the experience as "The Long Good-Bye," which as you all know is so true. And, although you knew Joe's time with you would soon come to an end, it is still a sad time for all of you. I know personally that you, Carol, and each and every one of Joe's loved ones made a positive difference in his life at a time when he most needed it...so be grateful for having been able to be there in ways that mattered the most. He loved each and every one of you so very much and that "Long Good-Bye" can now be celebrated, since he is finally at peace and has returned to the husband, father, and grandfather that you all once knew.
God Bless Joe and the entire Massaro family.

Joe and Carol Massaro are examples of the highest level...honor given to Sacred Marriage and The Family; adoration and
love of God--respect, encouragement and
friendship to those who preach and
minister the blessed Gospel.

For employees facing the Valley of personal
emergency, sickness, loss, death of loved
ones...authentic caring, help, and interest
was forever Joe's personal standard.

To those privileged to work for, and
closely with, Joe Massaro, opportunity
was given to become "all that one could
aspire to be!"

Rest from your labors, Joe, and
live in the Light of God Eternal!

There is much pain to endure when watching a loved one suffering with Alzheimer's Disease. There is the pain of perpetual grief. There is the raw wound of continuous loss. There is the struggle to preserve dignity and the desire to respect the present and cling to the past. However, in the midst of the heartache there is a small glimmer of light that exists to remind us of the things Alzheimer's CAN'T take away....The warmth of a touch, the importance of smiles and laughter, and the knowledge of what it truly means to experience unconditional Love and Acceptance !!!Our Deepest Sympathy to The Massaro Family and a Blessing to each and everyone of you for the love and honor and respect you gave your LOVED ONE!!RIP Mr Massaro Thank you for all you did,Randy and Flo Dischner and Family
