Joseph Reedy Obituary

Published by Reading Eagle from Jul. 13 to Jul. 14, 2021.
Joseph J. “Joe” Reedy, 92, passed away July 9, 2021, in his Reading residence. He was the loving husband of Jeannette A. (Stacherski) Reedy. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Harry and Anna (Sauer) Reedy. Joe “Lefty” is a member of the Class of ’46 of Central Catholic High School where he was a standout athlete in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was the captain of the basketball team that won 25 straight games, the captain and MVP in baseball, and the winner of a bronze medal in the mile relay at the Penn Relays. His athletic prowess earned him a full scholarship for football and baseball at Holy Cross, where he was named the outstanding pitcher in New England. In Legion baseball, Joe was the co-captain of the Gregg Post team that won the State title in 1947; subsequently, he was named the top player in the state with a 12-0 pitching record and a .356 batting average. One of his most remarkable baseball experiences was defeating Curt Simmons in two of three pitching duels. Joe played professional baseball for the Boston Red Sox organization at Roanoke in Piedmont League and Scranton in the Eastern League, compiling a 28-13 record in the minor leagues (including two no hitters). He also earned a master’s degree from Columbia University. Joe served our nation proudly in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Joe retired as a supervisor at Western Electric, after retirement Joe and his wife Jeannette enjoyed going to the Atlantic City casinos to see shows, play the slots and walk the beach. A devout Catholic all his life, Joe was a long-time member of Holy Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His grandchildren nicknamed him “tractor Joe” because of all the enjoyable times riding in the cart. In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children: Barbara, wife of Paul Cieniewicz and their children: Anne, wife of Romeo Papazyan, Mary Kate, wife of Kyle Shephard, Daniel, husband of Carly Cieniewicz, Elizabeth, wife of Jessie Kriner, Patrick Cieniewicz and Matthew Cieniewicz; Kathleen, widow of Brian Appleton, Sr., and their children: Brian Appleton, Jr. and Joseph, husband of Bailey Appleton; Mary Reedy, and her children: Joseph Babb and Michael Babb; Joseph, husband of Leigh Ann Reedy, and their children: Melissa Reedy, Michael Reedy, Jacqueline Reedy, Joseph Reedy and Grace Reedy; Margaret, wife of William Roth, and their children: Jack Roth, Katherine Roth and Luke Roth; and John, husband of Kathy Reedy, and their children: Emily Reedy, John Reedy, Anna Reedy and Caroline Reedy.
