JOSEPH SCARDINO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 29 to Oct. 30, 2009.
JOSEPH JAMES SCARDINO, age 84, passed away on October 27, 2009. He was born September 25, 1925 in Houston, Texas, to Felix Scardino and Rose Romano Scardino of Scardino Grocery Store on Bell & St. Emanuel Street. He leaves in God's care his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Josephine D. Scardino; daughter Susan Scardino Cline, husband Bill; son David Scardino and wife Robyn Scardino; son Daniel Scardino; grand children Matthew, Julia and Jennifer Cline, Joseph David and Siena Rose Scardino; and his siblings Catherine Scardino Vairin, Albert Scardino (Shirley) and Felix Scardino, (Patsy), and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.Joe is loved and remembered by many relatives and numerous life-long friends and associates. Joe left St. Thomas High School for World War II at the young age of 17 and later courageously fought and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He was later decorated with a purple heart, 2 bronze stars and a silver star. A quintessential entrepreneur, Joe was most known in Houston's business community for being one of the earliest premier grocery, news and periodical printers. Starting Handi-Ad Printing with partner Eddie Tamborello in 1952, the two pioneered and led Houston's grocery circular printing industry into today's modern advertising age.His love for the outdoors led Joe into fishing, hunting and flying, but his passion for golf was witnessed by some of the greatest pros and buddies alike. Hardly could another "south paw" ever touch his game.Funeral services will be held Friday October 30, 2009 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church at 19222 Hwy 249, at 2:00 p.m., followed by the funeral procession to Memorial Oaks Cemetery at 13001 Katy Fwy Houston, TX 77079 (281)497-2210. Memorial contributions may be made in Joe's memory to St. Thomas High School, 4500 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77007.We will miss Joe dearly and his spirit will always be in our memories.

Dear Joe,
Our deepest condolences for your family's great loss. You and I have been friends since our days at Annunciation parochial school, through St. Thomas High School, through WW II, through U of H and since. It has been a very interesting and joyful journey to have had you as a friend. Though 1500 or so miles separated us these past 50 years, you and Josephine found the time to visit us, and our friend-
ship grew even stronger through the years. Our visits to Houston were always memorable. Bonnie and I always looked forward to spending time with you and Josephine, et al. A couple days before your passing I asked Josephine to tell you that I'll be looking for a game some one of these days. Line up a good course, and we'll get it on. 'Might even get Joe and Charlie to join us. You'll have to play with right handed clubs though to make the game fair. God bless you Joe, I know you're happier now, not having to be sick.

Josephine and Family,

Joe was one of a kind who I am honored and blessed to have known. He has been instrumental in not only my professional life, but also in my personal life. From my boy playing baseball to my daughter in cheer, Joe was always asking about their progress and always showed concern. He often would speak of his family, especially the little ones he was a true family man.

Joe could really tell good stories about his time in the military, it is hard to believe one could have been through and sacrificed so much for his country ! Joe was a Great American Patriot ! The photo graph he I took when he received his Purple Heart and Bronze Star still and always will hang in my office to remind me of my Friend Joe Scardino. I will stride to be a fraction of the man Joe was and will remember the passion he had for family and his life.

My families thoughts and prayers are with you all during these times.

Dearest Scardino Family,

The name Joe Scardino was heard in our household all the time we were growing up. We kids would get so excided whenever we saw Joe anywhere because we knew he was such a dear friend of our dad, Joe Danna. I remember as a child looking forward to seeing Joe's smiling face whenever my mom, Sybil, my siblings, and I (out of us 10 kids there was at least 6 or 7 of us already born!) 'invading' Handy-Ad for a visit. He was always such a kind generous man. One example that is so dear to my heart is his helping make sure that the reception after Daddy's funeral was the best.

I pray that you, Joe's family, will find comfort in knowing that he has now seen the Face of God. I can't help feeling that Joe, Daddy, and all the rest of their friends in Heaven are now enjoying the ultimate '19th Hole'...Heaven. God Bless you all.
