Joy Starr Stinson

Joy Starr Stinson, 76 years old, of Birmingham, passed away on August 4, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents, T. F. and Ruth Starr, and two children, Julie and Michael Stinson. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Mike Stinson, two children, Andrea Jackson (Austin) and Grant Stinson (Natalie), four grandchildren, Davis Jackson, Katherine Jackson, William Jackson and Nash Stinson, brother, Travis Starr (Diane) and sister, June O'Connor (Jimmy) along with a wide circle of family and friends.

Joy was born on May 14, 1949, in Atlanta, GA. She moved to Augusta, GA with her family where she graduated from the Academy of Richmond County. She attended and graduated from Gulf Coast College, University of Florida and Troy University with bachelors and master's degrees in Early Childhood Education. She taught in public and private schools in Dothan, AL for over 20 years.

Joy loved the Lord and was active in her church. She taught children's Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and G.A.'s. She also served on numerous committees, including the Auxiliary of Big Oak Ranch and Alabama Power Service Organization. Joy participated in missions at home and abroad, serving in Ecuador and South Africa.

Joy loved life and being active; she especially enjoyed being with her family, traveling, entertaining and decorating. She had a gift of meeting people and making them feel comfortable. She cherished the many friends she had.

Joy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She devoted her life to them and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, August 18, in the Chapel at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church located at 1114 Oxmoor Road, Birmingham, AL 35209. Visitation for friends and family will be held in the Chapel at Dawson one hour prior to the service.
