Joyce Sogn

Brookings - Funeral services for Joyce (Sundling) Sogn, 84, of Brookings and formerly of Groton, will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 23 at the United Methodist Church, Groton. Pastor Jan Price will officiate. Burial will follow in Groton Union Cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton. Visitation will be held at the funeral chapel from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Joyce Elizabeth Benson was born on Aug. 20, 1921, to Luther and Anna (Brantsag) Benson in Willmar, Minn. She attended school in Groton, graduating in 1939. Joyce continued her education at South Dakota State University, Brookings, and received her bachelor's degree in 1943. She then enlisted with the Navy Waves, serving from 1944-1945. During this time she united in marriage with Charles Keith Sundling. Joyce returned to Groton in 1960 and was employed with First National Bank, Groton. In October of 2001, she married Arthur “Bud” Sogn and together they made their home in Brookings. Joyce passed away March 17, 2006, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Joyce was a longtime member of the Groton United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the church choir. She was also in Eastern Star for many years. She enjoyed walking, riding bicycle and playing bridge. Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Bob and Judy Sundling of Aberdeen, Jerry Sundling of Groton, and Diane and David Knutson of Sheridan, Wyo.; seven grandchildren: Traci Sundling, Jonathan Knutson, Erin Knutson, Joan Sundling, Thomas Sundling, Michael Sundling and Michelle Sundling. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, two brothers and two sisters. Casketbearers will be David Knutson, Jonathan Knutson, Rob Wanous, Tom Sundling, Mike Sundling and Larry Engeljtes.
