Judith Joseph Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 24 to Feb. 25, 2014.
North Hero, Vermont - Judith Goldstein Joseph, 70, passed away on February 21, 2014 after a long, brave struggle against Lou Gehrig's disease (A.L.S.). Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 16, 1943, she was the daughter of Freda (Moed) and Leon Goldstein. She leaves her husband of 50 years, Ben W. Joseph, her children, David and Anna, Claire Olivia Moed, a cousin that she helped to raise, her nieces Rachel and Ruth, her nephew Mark and their children and her five grandchildren Gabriel, Noah, Patrick, Daniel and Sarah.
Judith was a graduate of the College of the University of Pennsylvania (B.A.), Drexel University (M.S.L.S.) and the Rutgers School of Law (J.D.) She worked as a librarian at the Library of Congress and LaSalle University. After graduating from law school, she worked as an attorney in private practice with her husband in Philadelphia. During that time, she helped to found Women Against Abuse, an organization which started Philadelphia's first shelter for battered women. She moved to Vermont in 1991 where her career continued to flourish. She worked at a shelter for victims of domestic violence, Women Helping Battered Women, in Burlington and then became a deputy State's Attorney in Franklin County prosecuting crimes of domestic violence and sexual assault. Later she became coordinator for the state-wide Vermont Network against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. Her life was devoted to her family and serving the interests of human dignity, peace and justice.
She was a life-long member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and served as co-President of the Jane Addams Peace Association (JAPA) for three years until November, 2013. In the last two years, she worked as a volunteer attorney at the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Center.
Judith had a gift for friendship and had many devoted friends and colleagues. Sally, Judy B, Jeri, Lila, Sandy, Linda, Judy Dickson and many other dear friends will deeply miss her counsel and affection. Judith was pre-deceased by her parents and her beloved sister, Judge Martha Wyatt, of Annapolis, Maryland. The family is especially grateful to our friends and neighbors in North Hero who gave us so much comfort and support in this difficult time. Donations in Judith's memory can be sent to Women Helping Battered Women, 279 North Winooski Avenue, Burlington, Vermont and the Jane Addams Peace Association, 777 United Nations Plaza, New York, New York, 10017
At Judith's request, there will be no funeral service. A memorial will be held later this spring.

Dear Judith, I cannot believe that it is over 7 years since you left this world and I only knew you are a year and a half but you made an indelible impression on me. how can someone do so much for humanity and still have time to sleep? I am so proud to call you and Ben friends. Looking at this world you are probably crying, no screaming, "How did this happen?" and listening to the dismal predictions. Judith we need you now to help this country become human again. I miss you and Ben. Rest peacefully, mi amiga buena.
Love,
Elisa

I am proud to say that Judith was a dear friend of mine. I met her at a meeting of the Womens International League of Peace and Freedom at the Peace and Justice Center in Burlington Vermont. It was the first time I went to the meeting but she reached out to me and we went to Uncommon Grounds for a coffee. That was the beginning of our friendship. Judith was very busy, a lawyer for battered and abused women, and an avid peace advocate. She had time for everyone. I dont think she ever slept. What I remember most is our weekly coffees at Uncommon Ground. Bernie Sanders used to join us and I know it wasnt because of me. I hope that I did not have my mouth open and my eyes wide. I was in awe, but felt comfortable.
I left Vermont, but before I left I invited Ben and Judith to our house for dinner. I was so impressed that they came. Ben came with jars of preserves and tomatoes that he canned from his garden. Judith gave me a wooden Palestinian peace pin, that sits on my desk.
Judith, I miss you but I am so thankful that you were a part of my life.

Dear Ben and Family,

As International President of the Women`s International League for Peace and Freedom I had the extraordinary opportunity to meet Judith G. Joseph and witness first hand her work for peace, her devotion to peace education to children I personally highly respect and find very hopeful, therefore her work as leader of J.A.P.A. I deeply admired. I know her planted important seed for this Association to continue its committed work. Throughout our conversations I learned about hers and her mother history building peace and WILPF as an organization. I learned to respect her, even in moments when we did not completely agree in our opinions on certain matters, I felt respected. Her commitment to justice and peace were solid enough to continue dialogue. Her strength, sense of community, dedication will continue to inspire many and I will feel proud of having met her. My best wishes for you and your family, to stay strong and proud of her presence in your lives.

I will miss her presence in the world. Dian Kendrick

Dear Ben and family,
It took awhile for me to respond, the wind was kicked out of me when Morgan sent me the obituary. I did not want to face the fact that Judith is no longer in this world, walking amongst us. I met her in WILPF and I learned so much from her commitment to humanity. She tried to change the world and did so much for so many. but personally she was a great friend. I will miss dear Judith and my heart goes out to you, ben and her family she loved so much.

It was such a privilege for me to work with -- and learn from -- Judith. Her brilliance, grace, and compassion were so inspiring for so many of us. Our community is, actually and truly, safer and more just because of her. Blessings to her family.

Judith's radiant spirit gave inspiration to all those she loved and worked with. Her spirit and the meaningful life she lived will always be a beacon for those of us left behind. How far Judith exceeded Emerson's ideal: “To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived—this to have succeeded.” Thank you, dear friend.
My heart aches for you, Ben, and your wonderful Anna and David and for all of us who loved her so much. I am with you in spirit.
