Julia Gnuse Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 16 to Aug. 18, 2016.
Julia Ann Gnuse, 61, of Irvine, Calif., died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, in Overland Park, Kan., while visiting her sister, Revé Gnuse Butler.

She was born Jan. 18, 1955, a daughter of Lorenzo and Enna Marie Gnuse and grew up in Lewistown.

Upon graduation from high school, Julia lived in Rochester, Minn., and Overland Park, Kan., before moving to the Irvine area around 1985. Julia had a real zest for life, and loved talking to strangers. She was known as the Irvine Walker by the media and community because of her fast walking of 20-plus miles a day, rain or shine. Julia worked in several industries, but her favorite was her own business known as Sweet Temptations, which she operated for almost 10 years. She sold her homemade cookies and pies, made using recipes from her Grandmother Spicknall, to 7-Eleven stores and office buildings. She was approached on several occasions about opening a franchise or selling her recipes to large bakery companies, but she preferred to work independently with a few employees.

Julia became obsessed with getting tattoos in the early '90s, and ended up being in the Guinness Book of World Records twice (latest in 2011) for having the most tattoos. Due to her love of art, Julia became a walking artistic display of cartoon characters, famous people and pictures -- not your typical tattoos. She appeared on numerous TV shows, including the Guinness opening credits and show, Larry King, Ripley's Believe It or Not and German and Italian shows. A statue of her is in the Guinness Museum in Japan, and she has been featured in numerous magazines and newspapers.

She is survived by her sister, Revé and brother-in-law, Dennis Butler; her lifelong friend, David Bouska of Irvine; an uncle, Donald Gnuse of Quincy, Ill.; and cousins, Pamela Gnuse and Barbara Freiburg of Quincy and Chuck Gnuse of Lewistown and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, Lorenzo and Ida Gnuse and Wayne and Eva Spicknall.

Thank you Julia for your kindness to me in the early 1980s. We met in a music store and you invited me to play guitar on your original music demos at a top KC recording studio. You had won funding from a major record label to cut your very original and new-wave style rock songs. I was just out of high school and it was a real honor to be asked to be part of the creative work. It was great fun to work with you and your musical partner, and I learned a lot and enjoyed getting to know you both. RIP Julia, you are missed.

I was friends with Julie for a few year's. We met at GNC Vitamin Shop in South Coast Plaza. She was weighing herself on their commercial coin scale and I made a comment guessing her weight at 115 pounds she gave me a funny look, I laughed and went back to work. I was working at Oshman's in South Coast Plaza at the time. We crossed paths again and struck up a conversation. We became good friends and often drove to the stores together in her Red Truck where she sold her pastries to check her sales and restock the displays. She would always give me samples of her pastries and they were Delicious! Then she bought a larger Pretty Pink Pickup Truck with Hearts and her Company name written on it-- "Sweet Temptations" .I would stop to visit her while she was baking and all the ingredients were carefully measured, mixed and put in a preheated commercial oven. When I moved from Lake Forest to my own Apartment Julie visited a couple times ,but we eventually grew apart as friends and stopped keeping in contact with one another. Each of us starting new lives with new friends in different cities. I did meet her friend David aka Dave she called him and I know he cared very deeply for Julia and loved her very much. I'm sorry for the loss of your Sweet Loving Sister. She will be missed by All who knew and loved her friendly personality and happy smile.

Reve and Dennis,

The ones we love and lose are always connected by heartstrings into infinity.

Rest eternal grant unto Julia, Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

I remember Julia and Reve as small girls. When my Uncle Roy and Aunt Trudy Hoffman lived in Lewistown. They visited them often. They talked about them. They were so happy to have them be part of their lives. I was a Hoffman before I married I am now a Winking. RIP Julia.
