June Schmal Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 18, 2025.
June Schmal passed away peacefully in her sleep in Oak Park, Illinois, on March 16, 2025, at the age of nearly 103.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Sadie Oline; her siblings, Verla, Herbert, and Delmar; her first husband, Herb; her second husband, Ralph; her longtime partner, Glenn; and her children, Mary and Larry. She is lovingly remembered by her children Dian, Michael, Michele, and Pam; her nine grandchildren; her thirteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and the many spouses who joined the family over the years. She deeply loved her family and cherished their daily phone calls and time spent together.

Born in 1922, June grew up on a farm in Minden, Nebraska, where she attended a one-room schoolhouse and found creative ways to entertain herself-including tormenting gophers. Widowed at 27 with three small children, she found love again at 30 and raised six children. Throughout her life, she embraced change with resilience and determination. In later years, she mastered her iPad to play "Words with Friends" and send GIFs to family; rode mechanical bulls; played golf; and, above all, enjoyed games with loved ones-especially when she won.

June's wisdom and humor left a lasting impression. Among her many lessons: always use the good china, look your best even for breakfast at the dining hall, and never skip dessert. She lived a long and full life, leaving behind cherished memories.

In keeping with her practical nature, June donated her body to science through the Medical Education & Research Institute. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to their Genesis program.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on March 29, 2025, at Unity Oak Park, 405 Euclid Street.

Playing Words with Friends with you Grandma was a wonderful connection to you. My favorite match was when I played the word guano. Grandma immediately questioned what that word meant. I knew better, I knew it was bat excrement. I explained that to her. She said oh and we moved on. I giggled a bit- I don´t think she´d ever heard that word. But I also knew to NEVER play a made up word with Grandma.
