Kanon Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 27, 2025.
Kanon McCoy Smith, a member of the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, was born April 14, 2006, to parents Alisha Byrd and Ryan Smith. He was born in Roseville, California at Sutter Medical Center.

Kanon was preceded in death by his grandfather, Clay McCoy Byrd, and sister, Ryan Mariah Smith.

Kanon is survived by his parents, Alisha Byrd and Ryan Smith; stepfather Ryan Applegate; stepmother Alyssa Smith; siblings Jose Leos, Isaac Harrison, Vanessa Applegate, Maximus Applegate, Chrystal Smith, Kaleb Smith, Bella Smith, Rory Smith, and Kayden Lewis; his grandmother Harriet Roberts; and his significant other, Nayzeth Marquez-Meneses, and their unborn baby. Kanon is also survived by his uncle Anthony Roberts, aunt Melissa Roberts, and cousin Brayden Roberts; his uncle Robert Fischer, aunt Lynda Fischer, and cousin Lacey Fischer; and his aunt Gloria Lopez; cousins Briana, Alex, and baby Alejandro Robles; and a host of friends, family members and cousins everywhere including in his Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation.

Kanon was known throughout his life as a stylish young man who loved to ride motorcycles, play golf, and be there for his family and friends. His infectious smile was one to be remembered. Kanon graduated from Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy in June 2024 and had planned to begin working toward a career in mechanical engineering. Kanon had recently joined the Cultural Resources in his Native Heritage--his application to work within the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation Cultural Resources Department and in the Patwin Language Program had been accepted. Yes, he was extremely proud of his cultural heritage.

When Kanon felt an interest in something, he was passionate about becoming involved in it. He was in the process of starting to record music--it was something of interest he decided to do after many trips to the studio. Kanon also loved riding his quad in the hills and by the creeks. Riding had been one of his passions since he was young, and while riding, he would listen to his favorite songs and pop wheelies. Kanon also enjoyed the challenge of playing video games with family and friends. "Call of Duty" was a favorite, not to mention, "Last Tag". His plan was to one day be an arms dealer, build guns, and open a store where he could sell firearms. Kanon loved going shooting and swinging his golf clubs whenever he had the chance and he almost always went in his PJ's or sweats.

We pray that you remember Kanon for his laughter, sense of humor, and the love he gave each of us. He will be missed tremendously...Wile Bo!

Kanon,
I am so thankful for the time and memories shared with you. Waking up in my room to a loud voice entering the house with bubs and thinking "yup, that must be Kanon." Or simply getting on the game just to see "Twinkie" was on and knew it was about to be a good time and alot of smack talk. My favorite memory that often plays in my head on repeat is your connection with Omari and Xavien. Specifically a time you walked in the side door and X was in his highchair for lunch. He threw his arms up in the air and simultaneously your faces lit up as you went for a high five and started conversating like old HS buddies. Which fueled the ongoing joke of how Xavien was automatically drawn to you because there was finally another "White boy" in the house to hang out with. Your love filled the room and you brought joy wherever you went. You were genuine and unapologetically YOU. Words can't explain how much I love and miss you lil bro. I cherish the moments we shared. Your smiling face is forever etched in my mind. And your voice often plays through my head calling me Bud and our last words to each other being "I love you." It hasn't been easy without you, but just know that your memory is eternally in my heart...... PS. I've been trying that little adjustment you suggested in my golf swing, and it has actually made a difference, even though I told you I didn't want any help. Lol You were right!
I LOVE YOU WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING LIL BRO. Continue to watch over me and the boys please, until we meet again.
With ALL my love,
BUD.

Kanon, I will always carry you in my heart. You were the kid who knew what he wanted in life and went after it no matter what others said, and I admired that. No matter where you were or who was with you, you acknowledged those who you knew with a kiss, handshake or nodding of the head and that was respectful.

From the time you could talk I was always Grandma Pat. And, whatever question I´d asked you, you would answer with a "yes or no ma´am", and that I will miss tremendously.

I´ll always remember asking you to come over to Ahmie´s house and eat Catfish with us and you would say "I don´t like catfish" and I would say come and try it. Well, one day you did and after trying it you said "I won´t eat no other catfish but yours grandma Pat, it was good".

When I was always busy setting up parties for one of his family members he would come to me and ask, "can I help", and I would say no I got it you go and play, then the next thing you know he´d be helping and I would say ok do this or do that and he would stay and help and then say, grandma Pat, "is this my party", and I would tell him what do you think and he would laugh and say good bye, I´m outta here before Ahmie finds out". He had a way of always being there and showing his support or just to talk, laugh or hang around.

Only God can fill the void of a love one gone too soon, but I know he will always live on in my heart
