Karen Hanson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 8, 2025.
Karen Hanson, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on April 22, 1947, to Jack and Marie Kadel in Mission, Kansas, Karen was the eldest of three siblings. She spent her early years in Mission, graduating from Bishop Miege High School.

Karen's life was defined by her compassion and dedication to helping others. She married Robert Goebel, with whom she had two daughters. Although their marriage ended, Karen remained a steadfast friend to him, offering care and support throughout his life. Her selflessness extended beyond her family, shaping her personal and professional life.

Karen pursued her passion for caregiving by earning her RN degree from Johnson County Community College. She dedicated nearly 40 years to nursing at Overland Park Regional Hospital's Surgery Department, where she became known as a tireless advocate for her patients and their families.

Outside of her career, Karen was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished her family above all else. She was admired by those who knew her for her adventurous spirit, unwavering encouragement, and zest for life. Karen loved exploring new places, visiting historical landmarks, and discovering unique shops and restaurants. Her travels took her across North America and the Caribbean, often accompanied by her family or her long-time companion and best friend, Paul Quinlan. Even in her later years, she dreamed of new adventures and began studying Latin in preparation for a European trip.

Karen is survived by her daughters, Jeni and Liz (Tony); grandchildren, Jacob (Jenna), Matthew, Alex, Anna (Carson), Abby, Elyssia, AJ, and Emma; and great-grandchildren, Liam, Ryan, Ava, Elliot, and Iris. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Rick and Scott.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 9th, from 5-7 p.m. at Porter's Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS 66215. A Coffee Open House will take place on Friday, January 10th, after 8 a.m. at Liz's home, 8204 Noland Rd., Lenexa, KS 66215. The funeral service will follow at 10 a.m., with an Open House Lunch afterward at Jeni's home, 1610 E College Way, Olathe, KS 66062.

Karen's memory will forever inspire those who knew her.

Mom, today I started looking into the trips we had started dreaming about this year, and I became overwhelmed with grief. I loved my travels with you. My favorite moments on our trips together were watching you walk the beach, tipping your toes into the waves. Most of the pictures I have of you in these moments were taken unknowingly by you. I adored seeing you so happy I couldn't help photographing the beautiful moment. I don't know if I can ever see the beach again without feeling your presence, and I hope it will feel like a beautiful memory that makes me smile instead of a devastating loss.

Karena, I have loved you as a friend, a confidant, and as one of the best nurses I have ever worked with. I know you´re in the arms of Jesus. Your earthly worries are no longer. Until we meet again-Helena

Karen and I met 40 years ago when we were working as new nurses at the osteopathic hospital in Kansas City Mo. We were best friends from that day forward, and there was never a dull moment when we were together. Thank you Jeni and Liz for allowing me to be at her bedside in her final days. I will miss you forever Karen. Until we meet again at the end of the rainbow bridge. God hold you in the palms of his hands. My best friend.
