Karen Nicholson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 26, 2024.
Karen Christine Nicholson, 70, of Seminole, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 17 at her home.

Karen was born on February 2, 1954 to John and Ila Lee Hodge at the original Providence Hospital in the Southeast quadrant of Washington, DC and remained in the district for most of her childhood. Ever since she was a child, Karen enjoyed visiting the Jefferson Memorial and found peace strolling around the tidal basin.

She married her spouse, Bernie Nicholson in Vienna, Virginia in 1971 and remained married for 52 years until her passing. Karen and Bernie went on to have two children, Bruce (Marina) and Jeff Nicholson.

Karen and Bernie moved to Florida in 2011 to spend time with family and enjoyed the Florida sunshine every day. Karen enjoyed researching her ancestry and Bernie's and she tirelessly reviewed court records and other documents that were dated back hundreds of years, some within the United States and from other countries.

Karen is survived by her husband and children and her sister, Janet Bonsall. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Andrew, Victoria, Jeffrey, Marco and Mario.

Karen will be brought home to Washington, DC at a later date for a private family service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Trust for the National Mall.

SO long ago but if memory serves I remember all the good times we had at Burger King especially when Karen would whip out her own bottle of sauce from her purse (I forgot what it was) but it always made me laugh and her big blue eyes would twinkle!
The boys were just toddlers (mine and Jeff) and when we bought our house, one became available the next street over and she and Bernie bought it. I remember one winter night we had a house fire and at 2:30AM our dog awakened us. I grabbed my son out of his crib and ran barefooted to Bernie and Karen's. Bernie ran over to our house to help put out the fire while Karen and I waited and worried. I never forgot that night and the help they provided.
I remember Karen's black light poster room, her love of all things piggie and of course her love of family. I remember a giant skillet of pork chops she once made for Bernie (can he really eat all that?), yes, apparently he could.
Those were good times, good memories, great friends.
Rest easy Karen, love and peace to your entire family.
