Katherine Buhr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 27 to Jul. 28, 2022.
Buhr, Katherine 1/14/1945 - 7/21/2022 Ann Arbor On the morning of July 21, 2022, Katherine Ann Buhr passed at the age of 77. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Stan and Kate Syrett in January of 1945. Kathy's love of sports began by listening to Tigers radiobroadcasts with her father on their back porch. She adored her mother, whose memory, and belongings she safekept for decades. From her youth, she maintained a delightfully dry sense of humor, quiet love for people, and an affinity for reading, filling her days with books and laughter. She graduated from Central High School and the University of Michigan in 1963 and 1967, respectively. She remained in Ann Arbor, making the college town her lifelong home. She remained an avid fan of Michigan sports always ending her rendition of the National Anthem with 'home of the brave Wolverines'. She met her husband, Richard Buhr, whom she married in 1973, and together they raised two children Elissa and Ben Buhr. She maintained a love for animals until her death, especially golden retrievers, homing three herself and adopting two more to leave to her children. She loved to travel and had many wonderful trips to the Caribbean Islands with her friends and various locations in the U.S. with the 'Knitting Ladies.' She loved pilates and exercised with a group that stayed together for 30 years. Later in life she became interested in video poker earning the unofficial title of the "Royal Flush Queen'. She also opened Top Drawer Designer Apparel in the city with her best friend and business partner, Diane Norman. Together, they ran the store for 28 years before selling the business and retiring in the Spring of 2020 saving her energy for a demanding two-year fight with cancer alongside her close family and friends. She accepted the fact that she would not win. As expected, cancer took its toll, but it never defeated her spirit, goodwill, or concern for those she left behind. Thoughtful, lovely, and sharp-witted through her last days, she is survived by her husband of 49 years, Richard, and their two children, Elissa and Ben; her brother, David (Diane) Syrett; her nephew and niece Steven (Andi) Syrett and Tamara (Jeff) Carl; and three grandchildren – Andrew (Leanna), Zachary, and Kate. Also surviving are brothers-in-law James (Cheryl) Buhr, Thomas Buhr, and sister-in-law Martha (Bill) Grimes and her many other nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Huron Valley Humane Society. A memorial service will be held at Muehlig Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, August 2 with visitation beginning at 1 pm and the service at 2 pm. Muehlig Funeral Chapel

I'm thinking of Kathy today & remembering the times when we were 5 years old & played every day until we were college roommates & maids of honor at each other's weddings. plying kick the can, ringing doorbells, independence of our bike rides, little league games. boys & boyfriends, the Glass Hut...coming of age together. Our Beatles room in Jordan Hall at the U of M. I missed going to Europe with you & Margaret & Andrea...but kept our apartment going while you were away. Missed you in the years after I moved to New Jersey & Colorado & regret each day we didn't stay in touch better. Tho you've had several best friends since, you'll always be my best friend forever. Condolences to Elissa & Ben...what a great MOM you had & Rick...so sorry that you've lost your beloved wife Kathy. love, JUDY

Childhood memories keep rushing back...even now. Kathy & I grew up together, best friends. all our sleepovers, bike excursions where we were so free to go to meet friends from St Isidores...the Little league games, our first boyfriends, ringing doorbells & hiding in bushes; "cruising" downtown Grand Rapids in Kathy's Mom's yellow Olds convertible (top down) with socks in our bras; seeing the Beatles in 1964 in the FRONT row; our dorm room at the University of Mich covered wall to ceiling with Beatles pictures; Kathy & my roommates going to England & her coming back with that Vidal Sassoon haircut; Kathy working in the Ann Arbor bar with Meredith; the Prime Movers Blues Band; the Motown Review in Detroit with everyone from the 4 Tops, Supremes, to the Temptations all on one bill. Our dogs Stanley & Mother & their 11 pups. (both my Dad & Kathy's dad were named Stanley & born in 1900 & 1901.)I was Kathy's maid of honor at her first wedding. When I married, Kathy was mine. Her dad (Stan) handed my new husband a bill for all the times I'd eaten at their house!! Kathy visiting her parents with baby Elissa, put the formula bottle out on the ledge outside her bedroom window so she could grab it when Elissa woke. I was sleeping over! Drifting apart with lives focusing on family, new friends, & my moving to N.J. Noone before or since has remained such an important part of my life. I miss you, Kath!

Sincerest condolences to Kathy's family and friends. I knew Kathy from Top Drawer for all of the 28 years, and I considered her a friend. We would share stories of our dogs, and she always asked me how my dogs were, and even asked me to bring them into the store to visit. She was a lovely person and will be sorely missed.

We all go back a long way - but moving to California in '76 lessened opportunities to greet but Kathy had a special smile not lost in time.
Sending Rick and the Buhr family sincere condolences.

Saddened to hear of the loss of Kathy. I used to be in her Pilates class for years. I will always remember her vibrant personality. I pray for the family and find solace in knowing she is not suffering the ravages of cancer.

My childhood best friend is gone. I share in your tremendous grief, Rick, Elissa, Ben, David & Diane. Words seem so little to ease the pain & loss you all are experiencing. Kathy & I became best friends when we were 5 years old and became inseparable all through the years until we married & had kids. Both our dads were named Stan & the same age & took us together to see the Tigers at Briggs Stadium. Our brothers were friends. We experienced all the challenges of growing up; junior high, high school, boys, heartaches, & off to U of Michigan together as college roommates. I was your maid of honor, Kathy, & you were my maid of honor. My kids called you "Aunt Kathy" & Elissa called me "Aunt Jude". My moving left a void and we went our separate ways but you were always with me. I hold my memories of you, Kathy, in my heart and love you forever. I have never in my life experienced such a friend again.
