Kathleen (Kaye) Borgesen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 11, 2024.
Kathleen "Kaye" Borgesen (McCarthy) born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia (4/17/1940), died at 83 years old at her Lakeland, Florida home where she and her husband Steven Borgesen lived half of the year. They shuttled between their homes in Newton, Massachusetts, and Bridgton, Maine for the other six months. Each time with a pole straddling the back seat on which Steve's patterned shirts and her brightly colored, often monochrome outfits hung.

She left her coal mining town at 19 to come to Boston where she was a housekeeper when she wasn't carousing in Jamaica Plain at Kilgariff's bar where she met her husband. They dated twice, punctuated by her breaking up with him after she visited the building site and he refused to come down off the roof to talk. A few years later they reconnected and got married. She cried so much walking down the aisle that the priest asked her if she wanted him to stall for ten minutes until the bus made its stop outside the church. She and Steve were married for nearly 55 years. During that time, they camped, built a home together, raised two kids, played cards, traveled, and bickered.

Kaye was incapable of dishonesty. If she thought you were full of it, were doing something stupid, or had no common sense, you would know it, either through her incredulous look or hearing her ask, "Are you crazy?" She would strike up a conversation with anyone and not think twice about asking personal questions. One time when someone whom she had just met told her his brother was getting divorced, without a pause she asked, "Who was cheating on who?"

Never one to accept any kind of bigotry, or hate, she was welcoming to all. There was never a stranger, only a friend that she hadn't yet met. Anyone was always welcome in her home. She could be cantankerous and was determined. She didn't graduate from high school but was hell-bent on her daughters getting advanced degrees and doing better than she had.

She was proud of the life she made and of her daughters Paula Wilson (and her husband Bob); and Cathy Borgesen (and her husband Mehmet Dincer). She had three grandsons who loved her, Michael and Andrew Wilson; and Dylan Dincer who will miss her fiercely.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 14th at 4:00 at the clubhouse at 4800 Colonnades Club Blvd, Lakeland, FL 33811, and can be viewed remotely at https://tinyurl.com/kayememorial

Auntie Kaye, without you, the last 52 years of my life would have been very different. You welcomed me in and gave me a fresh start. Your love of camping led to meeting my husband and for that I will always be grateful. I will miss you. Give my mom a big hug please.

Condolences to the whole family. Kathy, Dylan and Mamet - I didn´t know Kaye as well as many of the folks here. But I´ll never forget her kindness for making me feel so welcome when you all included me in your family Thanksgiving feast at a difficult time for me.

We feel so lucky to have spent 40 plus years across the street from Kaye and the Borgesen family. Raising kids, in succession and being able to share generations of our families has been so special. Kaye was a rare person who could see a situation and address it without prejudice but with common sense. She welcomed all to the neighborhood and always made us laugh. She was no nonsense and her honesty was appreciated. She will be missed deeply by all.

Kaye was the first person to greet us when we moved in across the street. We had moved from California and had not adjusted to the neighborhood. Kaye helped us adjust with her warm personality and friendship. She was an active learner and went back to school to receive her GED. Dottie and Robin Drayer went with her when she became a United States Citizen. Lots of interactions with kids as families grew up and became professionals. We manage to keep in touch over the years by having dinner together when Newton was on their travel list. Kaye made sure of those dinners. Dottie was on her speed dial to keep in touch when traveling to Florida and Maine. Kaye will be missed, but remembered by all of us. Bill & Dottie

Uncle Steven, Cathy, Paulà and family,
I'm am so sorry to hear of Aunt Kay's passing. My condolences to you all.
I have a lot of fond memories of aunt Kay (as well as all of you) growing up.
Spending time camping on Long Lake are cherished memories. Family was everything thing to her. Kay always had a positive outlook and I loved her sense of humor. "It ain't Mae West, but it's my best!" She would say. Thank you for filling my summer vacations with great memories!

Hi Steve. So sorry to hear about Kaye. We go back a long time. Had a lot of laughs at Kilgariffs. Remember the time I made the pies at your cottage and the friggen pies leaked in the oven. That was a fun weekend. May she rest in peace. Love Marla & John.
