Kathleen Okon Hoesley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 13, 2024.
Kathleen Ann Okon Hoesley, 67, passed away peacefully at her home in Chicago, Ill. on September 27, 2024, surrounded by her loving family after a brave battle with cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

Born on February 28, 1957, Kathy grew up in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood alongside her sister Christine Okon, her brother Edmond Okon (1945-1988), and her parents, Frank Okon (1922-1989) and Florence Okon nee Sloan (1924-1997). She attended St. Cyril and Methodius grade school, Lourdes High School, and Northern Illinois University.

Kathy proudly identified as a "Chicago girl" throughout her life, often expressing her deep love for the city. A passionate fan of classic rock and blues, she shared this musical appreciation with her late husband, Stephen E. Hoesley (1956-2016), and their sons, Stephen and Ryan Hoesley. Together, they built a successful commercial insurance business, and developed and managed several residential properties.

Kathy found immense joy in being a grandmother to Charlotte "Charlie" Hoesley, the daughter of Stephen and his wife Jessica Balfour. Her older sister Christine was close to Kathy from beginning to end and treasures the many life memories they shared, including their spontaneous rendition of "Sisters, Sisters" from the movie White Christmas.

Adventurous and fun-loving, Kathy shared countless joyful moments with friends and family. She was part of an internationally award-winning cheerleading team at Lourdes High School, became the first female lifeguard for the Chicago Park District in 1975, cheered for the White Sox throughout her life, and celebrated a hole-in-one during one of her many golf outings. She cherished both lighthearted and meaningful experiences with her many friends, including those she spent her final years with at the Chicago West Town Senior Center.

A lover of animals, Kathy could never resist stopping to pet and chat with every dog she encountered. If all dogs go to heaven, she will surely be among good company.

Even in her final days, Kathy's warmth and humor shone through. When a visiting nurse asked how she felt, she simply lifted her thumb and smiled.

Kathy left us in her favorite season, Fall. As the leaves change colors, let us remember the vibrant joy she brought to our lives. She was truly an extraordinary woman, and her absence will be deeply felt.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life on Saturday, November 2nd at Siena Tavern (51 W. Kinzie Street, Chicago, IL 60654) beginning at 12:30pm.

I came to know Kathy later through mutual friends. She was always fun to be around, loved her infectious laugh. She used to call me her little Republican friend. RIP Cathy, u will be missed.

I am so saddened to hear of such a great loss to mankind. She will always be remembered to me as "Okon". That's how I introduced her to my Mom when she came to visit me at my home for the first time. We spend many adventures together in high school, hitchhiking all over Chicago. We had so much fun together. After high school at Lourdes, she went to NIU while I went to SIU; she got married to Steve and I moved out to California. Many years later she called me when her son developed Type 1 diabetes, remembering that I developed it in my Sophmore year at Lourdes which she said stuck with her forever. Christine, if you are still in SF, please contact me at [email protected]. Your whole family is in my prayers. May she rest in peace.

Life is made of small precious moments, and Kathy was a master of creating those moments with everyone she met. Kathy knew how to live life fully and loved everyone wholeheartedly. I remember so many great times with Kathy, movie nights, dinners, Sunday golf, golf trips, and just hanging out having glass of wine. I will honor her memory to remember to bring a little bit of her light and laughter into my life just as she would have wanted. Love you my friend, you will be greatly missed always and forever.
