Kirby Grochal Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 20 to May 21, 2023.
Kirby Green Grochal, of Newton, MA, passed away on May 19, 2023, five years after being diagnosed with an aggressive pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer. She was the loving wife of Andrew Grochal and mother to Derek and Sydney Grochal. She is also survived by her parents, Melanie and Rich Green, and her brothers, Kevin and Connor Green.

The family will be holding a small, private, family-only funeral but is planning a larger event as a celebration of Kirby's life - a life cut way too short, but incredibly well-lived and filled with love and happiness. The event will be held on Thursday, June 22 from 10 AM - 12 PM at The Connors Center in Dover, MA. Per Kirby's wishes, we ask attendees to wear bright colors, celebrate Kirby with your favorite stories and memories of her, and try to smile for having gotten to know this amazing woman. All are welcome to join, but please don't feel any obligation, especially if travel is involved.

Kirby's wish is to be remembered not as a cancer patient, but as a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend. She will be greatly missed, but always in our loving memory as a strong, brave, fiery, hilarious, sweet, brilliant, tenacious, caring and inspiring woman who touched so many people's lives.

I have many memories of Kirby watching her (from across the street) grow from a sweet delicate baby through the years until she left Glen Rd and went off to college...focused, funny, vibrant, and determined...always adoring of her brothers and her family. May her memory be a blessing.

No one else but Kirby could or would consider doing this, but while she was still being treated with chemo she found the time and strength to celebrate my 80th birthday at her home. Something I will never forget. God Bless KIRBY

I had the privilege of getting to know Kirby (and Andrew) through being part of Section A at business school. From the first time I met Kirby in September 2010, I was impressed by her intellect, kindness, and sense of humor. I feel lucky to have known Kirby, and please know I am sending the Green and Grochal family so much love from Seattle.

Kirby found me on a cancer support website after she learned that my husband had the same dreaded cancer diagnosis. We quickly became friends. Ironically, over the following five years, she taught ME how to live - with grace and strength - no matter the hurdles you encounter. What an INSPIRATION she was. I'm honored to have known her even for a little while...

I´m so incredibly sorry to hear of Kirby´s passing. She was my very first best friend (Wellesley Children´s Center daycare/preschool!) and some of my earliest memories are of endless play dates at her house. I´ll never forget things like hanging out when we both got chicken pox, playing a million rounds of Guess Who, and Melanie making us peanut butter play dough. I moved away and we lost touch, but she clearly had grown into an amazing woman that I would´ve been lucky to know in adulthood. My heart goes out to her family, may she rest in peace and love. xx Allison Wells Zuckerman

I am heartbroken to learn of Kirby´s passing. She was my first friend growing up in our Wellesley neighborhood. I will always have fond memories of sleepovers, trick or treating, summer camp, Canobie Lake Park and playing in the best tree house in the neighborhood.
Kirby was such a wonderful person; smart, caring, someone you couldn´t count on and she always did the right thing.
My condolences go out to her family, she will be dearly missed.

Kirby was such a brave warrior; although small in stature, she loomed large in her ability to bravely fight off (for 5 years) the cancer that tenaciously attacked her. We are so grateful that she was able to experience the collective love of her family and friends, and to shower them with her love. Kirby will be missed, but she will always be an inspiration to all who were lucky enough to have known her. Rest peacefully, sweet Kirby.

Much love always....
