(LT. COL. U.S. ARMY, RET.)
Lt. Col. Lafayette Taylor Newcomb, (U.S. Army, ret.), 87, of Frederick County, Virginia, died Thursday, March 29, 2012, in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Lt. Col. Newcomb was born in 1925, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Lafayette Douglas and Carrie Alita Newcomb. He was an Industrial Engineer with Railroad Transportation Maintenance. He was of the Presbyterian faith, a member of the Mason (32nd Degree) as well as the Reserve Officers Association. Mr. Newcomb was a Veteran, having served in the United States Navy, during WWII. He served on the submarine, USS Tautog - SS199, from 1943-1946. After his service to the U.S. Navy, he joined the United States Army, serving from 1951 until his retirement in 1977. He was a graduate of Duquesne University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. His wife, Zella Corrine Getty Newcomb, whom he married in 1946, preceded him in death in 2007. Surviving are three daughters, Denise Sherman and husband, William, of Orlando Florida, Dale Szewczyk and husband, Kendrew, Donna Hemlinger and husband, Clifford, all of Elyria, Ohio; son, Dana Newcomb and wife, Kathleen, of Winchester, Virginia; ten grandchildren; eleven great- grandchildren and his sister, Wilma. DeLisio of Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pleasant Hills, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Chapel. Interment Jefferson Memorial Park.
