Lari White Obituary
She had been diagnosed with advanced peritoneal cancer in September 2017. Last week, she entered hospice.
White’s second album “Wishes”” was released in 1994 and was a big success. She charted three top ten country singles from the album; “That’s My Baby,” “That’s How You Know (When You’re In Love),” and “Now I Know.” She was nominated for top new female vocalist by the Academy of Country Music.
White started singing at a young age with her family’s band, The White Family Singers. After college, she sang in Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles and then moved to Nashville. She won first prize on the Nashville Network's talent show, “You Can Be a Star.”
She was signed to RCA Records and released her debut album “Lead Me Not” in 1993. The album achieved moderate success. She charted with the single “What a Woman Wants,” then broke out with her second album “Wishes.”
After White’s deal with RCA ended, she started her own record label called Skinny White Girl. Her most recent release was the 2017 double EP “Old Friends, New Loves.”
White was also a songwriter and a producer. She co-produced Toby Keith’s 2006 album “White Trash with Money.” She had her songs recorded by Travis Tritt and other top country artists.
White was also an actress. She appeared in a small memorable scene at the beginning of the Tom Hanks’ movie “Cast Away.” She had a role in the 2010 movie “Country Strong".
She told “The Tennessean” in 1994, "By the time I'd moved to Nashville, I'd been singing for so long, but I wasn't comfortable enough on the stage between songs, so I started taking acting lessons."
"Gutted by this news," Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Broadway hit “Hamilton” wrote in a remembrance on Twitter. "Taught alongside (White) in the ASCAP Songwriters' program one summer – you've never met a kinder, more talented songwriter."
Travis Tritt also paid tribute on Twitter. “I’m extremely saddened by the passing of my friend Lari White. She was so talented and a joy to write and record with. My heart goes out to all of Lari’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time.”
She is survived by her husband, songwriter Chuck Cannon, and their three children.

Lori you were an angel with that sweet angelic voice that I listened to over and over. I know you are singing in Heavenly Fathers Choir with joy and happiness that I look forward to hearing again someday. Cancer doesnt defeat us it makes us stronger and if we leave before our family, thats ok, because we can better prepare a place for all our loved ones in Heaven. God bless who you were here and God Bless who you are now with him. I just happened to come across an article telling of her passing away. I bought her albums "Lead Me Not" and "Wishes" when they were released in the '90s. Such sad news to hear of the passing of such a beautiful person and singer. I can still remember when her song ' Now I Know' came out. It was my favorite song of all time. Every time I would listen to it on the radio or play my LP I would sing the song word for word with her. I will miss her voice but everytime I hear her songs I will always remember her. Lari's talent was a gift to us all. Been listening to her music for years, and have been fortunate to see her perform live when she did concerts locally. I remember one in Dunedin at the Blue jays stadium. She was fabulous. We watched her career with much interest, and were deeply saddened to learn of her passing. RIP Lari. You are missed.

I knew Lari as a student at the University of Miami School of Music (Frost School). I was rather new to UM when Lari was there, but she became one of those memorable students--always searching for new challenges. A real joy to know. I am so saddened to learn of her death. We all loved Lari.

She was one of my first "Sunshine Singers" and I recognized this beautiful, mature voice when she was in 4th grade.I have followed her career from Dunedin High School to my alma mater (University of Miami) and beyond. i remember so long ago i was judging a talent show and Lari sang .. on a stool under golden light with her guitar.. My wife and I saw her perform and met her on a few occasions. It was always at a charity event, giving of her time and love to the need of others. She was a truly loving soul. And having just lost my wife to cancer as well, makes watching another great woman's similar plight, utterly bewildering. My heart goes out to the family and friends of Lari White. A beautiful talented lady. The first time I saw her I thought she might be shy as I knew nothing about her. When she was on stage I was totally blown away. She was so incredible in every way. Lari, I remember hearing you sing when I was in college and I had your tape. I have been crushed to learn of your death at such a young age. I can only imagine what your children must be losing their mother just as they are becoming adults. I lost mine at 40 and I still feel her loss 3 years later. At least you are now in a better place and you left behind something to the world with your music.

I first met Lari in 1995 at the Country Jam, Grand Junction, CO. We spoke for a few minutes before her show. Lari was so down to earth, friendly and her smile so contagious! When I moved to Nashville, TN to pursue my career as a Singer Songwriter, Lari was one of the first Singer Songwriters to welcome me into the music profession. We both loved the "In The Round" shows at The Bluebird Cafe. Like myself, Lari wrote songs from the heart, wasn't about fame or money, it was about compassion, sharing and touching others with our songs. Lari was a beautiful inspiration and will always be! Lari was the ultimate Songerwriter's friend who always made time to listen, to help others, she truly gave from her heart!! Thank you for coming into my life and letting me into yours! I'll miss you Lari!!

Lari was so fun to have in Chorus class back in 82-83. A true inspiration in all she did. A genuine, sweet and wonderful lady. I was very heartbroken to hear the news that she was fighting cancer and yet cancer took her away so quickly and at a young age. They say the good die young. I wish we had more time to spend with her but the memories are plentiful and fond. R.I.P. My friend. Will miss you.
