Three New Years eves ago I walked out to the Clocktower in downtown Telluride for the midnight community gathering. After midnight I stepped into the New Sheridan lobby to get warm. Facing away from me stood an animated conversationalist wearing a full length racoon or bear or otherwise wolfish fur coat and a 20 gallon cowboy hat. As the character turned around I immediately recognized Larry Epstein (from 25+ years back). It could be no other than he in this garish and loveable style. We shared a couple of hours and more than a couple of drinks. He confessed he had never really liked me before, but that he loved me now. That was the animated honesty and one-off personality of Larry. God Bless him!

Our deepest sympathies to your family. Mr. Epstein: You seemed to be every student's "favorite teacher." Our son, Geoff, used to come home every day from school with a new "Epstein story." You were one of his favorite teachers. He was very sad to hear of your death. He said you taught him to love and appreciate great literature. He went on the England /Ireland trip in 2008 with you and had a wonderful time; opened his eyes to a whole other life/culture outside the States. Geoff said you were the most intelligent person he'd ever met-always quoting from some book or poem. He also liked your quirky sense of humor, your unconventional ways. You will be truly missed; may you rest in peace.

You left us far too soon Epstein. I'm sitting here reading all these different stories and memories being shared about you. Reminiscing about my own experiences. You impacted so many lives, touched so many people, inspired so many young students and adults alike. You were such a different breed of a person. You were very unique, and that made you so interesting. It saddens me to know that future students will not have the opportunity to be touched by your character, inspired by your teachings, and humored by your awesome personality. Had you been with us longer I truly believe you were one man that had the potential to impact a world. May your spirit live on through all those you've touched and may you Rest In Paradise Mr. Epstein.

You were an amazing teacher. I wish I had the chance to have more classes with you. In the 12 years in DPS only a handful of teachers have influenced me in the way you have. Your brilliance and wit radiated throughout the school. I can't help but feel like my last year in class with you, you were trying to teach me something else besides what we were supposed to be learning in class. You were right.... You knew.... There are so few people in this world left like you. May you rest in peace.

I remember you were reading a poem once... walking around the room with your point... passionately saying the words you had memorized... or maybe you were making it up on the spot. Either way, by the end of the poem, you had tears in your eyes. You were such a passionate person and unique teacher. Thank you for all of the memories!

My thoughts go out to Lawrence Epstein's family and friends. I hope you find comfort seeing what an inspiration he was to many. I had the privilege of being one of his students and loved him so much I asked to be his T.A. I'm sad that future generations will not have the honor or knowing him. Yet, I am comforted by the memories I have and the time I got to spend with him. My greatest memories from high school were all from his class. Thank you Mr. Epstein for dedicating your life to teaching. Thank you for sharing not only your intellect, but your life stories and humor with us all. May you find peace and pizzazz in wherever your journey takes you next.

Mr. Epstein, you will be sadly missed. I remember getting my schedule and on it was a class called "Electric Humanities", I thought what the heck is that??? Then I saw you and I thought I don't care, this teacher looks awesome! I was too afraid to get up in front of the class to speak, and for that you said I could get an "F", however you let me do another project and all was good. You had a pair of the coolest pants ever! Anyone whoever had you as a teacher should remember how lucky we were! RIP good man!

I've known Lawrence as one of my best friends for the past 15 years. It is so great to hear from his past students because I've always known he must have been an absolutely amazing teacher. Thank you for sharing your stories. He was always so proud and enthusiastic about his job. I remember he'd say... when a student would answer a question wrong, he'd say, "well if when you say 'no', you really mean 'yes', well then you'd be right." I feel very blessed to have had his light in my life.
When Lawrence walked into a room, the room would light up with fresh energy. You had to be on your toes. He challenged me to think but then he always also brought "new life", interest, and fun to the party. His unique ways, his laughter, his pizzazz, his music, his style, his thirst for unique knowledge, his confrontational manner - it all blended together into this fantastic, amazing friend. Thanks for loving me, Lawrence. I love you and I miss you.
Go forth and spread your special kind of cheer to the rest of the universe. It has no idea what it is in for. I hope that it is epic.

Epstein was an amazing individual. I am so glad that I had the honor of knowing him and being his student. His teachings may have been slightly unorthodox, but he taught me more in one year than I had expected. It wasn't just about the literature, but real life experience. His stories were so crazy and funny. He truly lived his life to the fullest without regrets. I am sad that he is gone because he was so influential and I believe that more people could have learned great life lessons from him. I am sad that more people will not get to know him, but he was already so important to so many people. Thank you for everything you have done for all of us, Epstein. You will live on through your friends, family, and students; never to be forgotten. Rest in peace, Epstein.

Mayest thou rest in peace, dear friend! Death has severed the tie that united us in this life, to be renewed everlastingly in a happier world I shall one day follow thee. .
Now, faithful to thy memory, I implore G-d to grant repose unto thy soul; and to vouchsafe to me the grace of a reunion when His holy will shall call me hence. .
My G-d! Permit that the soul of him (her) for whom I mourn, freed from earth's painful struggles, dangers and difficulties, and purified through Thy mercy, may share the joys of the blessed in eternity. Amen.
Here is a prayer from you religion i thought you would love it. Rest in peace Mr. Epstine

Mr. Epstein was by far my favorite teacher at Kennedy. This wasn't because he was so knowledgeable about what he was teaching, although this was impressive as well, but because of his knack for making learning intriguing and fun in a way that no teacher I have had since has been able to do. Mr. Epstein was an incredible teacher who made each person that was a part of his class feel at home, whether that was by squirting them with water because he felt like it, sharing hilarious personal stories about his life experiences, or by challenging them to think outside the box, he was a fantastic teacher. As I begin my career as a teacher it is my hope that I will be able to do what he did for so many over the years- inspire. Thank you for sharing your creativity, understanding, and fantastic sense of humor with us all- you will be greatly missed!

Rest in peace Epstein. You taught me not just a lot about literature, but about life, and to not care what people think of me. I'll never forget you, or your crazy stories. I'll never forget you drawing on a picture of my ex-boyfriend because you didn't like him either, or when you called me out for turning in a crappy essay because you expected better from me. Every time I walked into your classroom, I never knew what to expect. All I know is that I was going to enjoy that time. Not only were you an amazing teacher, but you taught me that it was ok to be an individual and to stand out from the rest. Lord Jim, though silent and strong, may be
Surpasses not that of Lawrence's legacy
Boisterous, colorful, and loud was his life
That sometimes obscured a man's inner strife
On the Patna, Lawrence sailed to sea
On land, Patusan was his reverie
A Jewel he donned held close to heart
That shone through the platudinous dark
Now fallen into soul's abyss
Mr. Epstein, Lorenzo, you will be missed.

I knew something was off since the beginning of the year Mr. Epstein. I've heard only stories of how you were one of the greats - a teacher worth learning under. I stepped into ur class a week late but nonetheless I was pumped up to learn from you.
I felt something was off but I never questioned any further. I had hoped to have you as a teacher for the length i was to be at the school and so along with many others, i only wish to pay my respects. I have no right to mourn among those who have truly connected with you, but I still wish for your parents to have strength.
Mr. Epstein, sir, thank you for the years You've thanklessly given to students.
