Larry Van Horn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 9 to Aug. 10, 2017.
February 17, 1937 - August 4, 2017
Larry J. Van Horn, a lifelong resident of San Antonio, died Friday, August 4, 2017. After a long and courageous battle with multiple health challenges, Larry received peace with his devoted wife at his side. He was born February 17, 1937 to O.J. and Louvae Van Horn, and graduated from Alamo Heights High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Trinity University in 1962, and was an active member of the Bengal Lancers.

Larry established a successful career in real estate and construction, serving three terms as President of the Texas Apartment Association and managing his own real estate firm. He was a life member of the S.A. Livestock Exposition, and greatly enjoyed being on the Hospitality Committee. They welcome visitors to the grounds, and he always looked forward to renewing old friendships and celebrating his birthday at the rodeo. The Spurs also received his loyalty as a season ticket holder for 30 years. His father was a Trustee of Boysville for many years, and Larry followed as a member of the Board of Directors. His parents were charter members of Oak Hills Country Club where he also retained membership, eventually remodeling a home on the golf course. As health issues limited his activities, his view of the course and its abundant deer population brought him much joy. Friends were often treated to candid pictures of the familiar faces which showed up each day. The herd will miss him.

Larry choreographed a small, surprise wedding to Cynthia Winn Allan in the Oak Hills living room in 2010. As a result, late in life, he became an instant father and subsequent grandfather, greatly enhancing his world. The little ones fondly called him "Boss."

Larry is survived by his wife, Cynthia; sister, Judy Van Horn Paddock; nephew and niece, Scott Paddock and Holly Paddock Smith; their children, Kayla, Makenzie, Carrie and William. His beloved first cousins, Patricia Klaver Sebesta and Beverly Klaver Lewis survive him, in addition to Vann Allan, Dr. James and KC Allan Waldron; grandchildren, Cleo Beth and Henry, as well as many cousins special to him.

Funeral services will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Friday, August 11 at 2:00, with the Revs. William G. Lewis and Michael Koehler officiating. A reception will follow. Friends are also welcome to join the family for a committal service at Sunset Mausoleum on Saturday morning, August 12 at 11:00. Honorary pallbearers include Bruce Krahn, Rafael Luebbert, Jim Hollan, Scott Paddock, Vann Allan, Larry Morris, Tom Heffron and Ron Schmidt. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boysville or any cause which is meaningful to you.

To my friend, Larry. Rest in peace, Dude. Since the late 70's my most reliable friend. My most fun friend. I will surely miss reaching you by that crazy telephone no. The telephone co. better retire it and never issue it to anyone else again - it should always be yours, Larry. Take good care, bud - oh, and be on the lookout for me - while I am still down here, and when I get to go to that final Martini party up in the clouds where we will always remain, once we get in, of course, if I get an invitation - may I wear my hat please? Greet me at the door, if you don't mind - I will be looking for you.

Larry energized a room by just being in it. He was an unforgettable force of good will and humanity. I am so happy that he met, Cindy, "the love of his life" and was surrounded by "family" these past years. All who knew him will celebrate his life, and I for one, am grateful to have known him.

I remember Larry and Judy and their patents as a teenager on College Blvd. he was always a very hard working, industrious guy with lots of friends who folded newspapers for delivery at the Van Horn home. I'm so glad he was happily married (alto I heard he was very slow to find that RIGHT GIRL). I know he will be missed by many family and friends

We are very sad to hear of Larry's passing. Fran knew him back in the late 1960s when she used to go to his Sunday afternoon Football get-togethers, long before she and Frank met. Frank knew Larry from commercial real estate, shared Spurs season tickets during that time and all three socialized many times.

Our wonderful memories will stay with us always.

They don't come any better than Larry Van Horn. A true 'best friend' since the 1960's. When I moved here then, he made my 'new city' in San Antonio feel like 'home' when we shared an apartment and house. Never missed a beat and always visited and kept in touch until I returned in the late 70's. The many great memories are treasured. He will be missed at our 'Birthday Lunches' at Raffles and all of our gatherings. I will truly miss my friend.

The grandkids got it right, "Boss" is a perfect name for Larry! Especially these past few years as he met his health challenges head-on, with the determination of a lion; and Cindy, as his lioness, which would forever protect and comfort him. We're sad that Larry's now gone; and yet, so is his pain. I'm confident he's in the right place. I can see him now... telling St. Peter an off-color joke at the Pearly Gates! You will be sorely missed, my friend.

Larry was always a true gentleman and he leaves a very treasured legacy for many of us who had the wonderful experience of living in San Antonio. He was one of the more charming movers & shakers along with JD (Shady) Strickell when I live there in the 70's. Larry and Shady are both in My Prayers.
