LAURA McALPINE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 17, 2019.
McALPINE, LAURA JANE May 3, 1972 - August 12, 2019 Laura Jane McAlpine and Alan McIntyre: No greater love ("M&M"). Laura shares her luminous light through: love, strength, song and, above all else, faith. Laura's lifelong passion is singing and performing. She raised the roof, hearts, and spirits by way of Handel's Messiah, Sondheim and Gershwin, Leonard Cohen, and Heine, Schumann and Lysenko... Her vibrant, vivacious, creative spirit: holds fiercely loyal friendships, it braves battles, and it loves without end – unapologetically. Those warmed by her love include: her life love Alan, Jeanie and Gerry (Mom and Dad), Deb, Cheryl and Di (sisters), Jen, Mel, Nicole and Amy (nieces), Te-Greg and Sam (nephews), Laila Grace (great niece), Stacey and Greg (brothers) who all too recently passed on before her to help prepare her place with them, and her precious Erin. Laura is also loved and missed by Kai and Scout, many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and fans. As a freelance Opera singer, Laura's soaring vocal gift was honed at School of Music - Brandon University, University of Manitoba and University of Toronto (B.A. Honours). Her performances with Manitoba Opera Chorus, Canadian Opera Company Chorus, Elmer Iseler Singers (Mezzo Soprano), Rainbow Stage, Highgate Road, and Three Day Band (to name a few) were admired by countless fans. After a 10-week journey dealing with cancer, Laura's ferocity (familiar to all who knew her well) was met by a peace-filled passing... on her terms... with grace. Thank you to all the staff at St. "Charlie's" Hospital in Perth who cared and advocated for her journey home to Winnipeg. Thank you to the HSC teams of Dr. Dawe, Dr. Christiansen, "Dr. Sandy", Dr. Rathod, Christy and Theresa and to Dr. S. Iskander and Devarshi, along with all those attentive, warm smiling faces at Cancer Care and the precious Angels from "Home Care". We miss her. We believe this is a new beginning for Lo and her Light. We believe she's singing... and at the top of her set list: "Don't stop me now, I'm having such a good time /I'm having a ball" (from Queen) and "Never Enough" (from The Greatest Showman). We sing back: "Sleep now *our* little one where the angels will keep you, your shining eyes close to stillness around. Heaven has sent you and *we* love you forever. Sleep now in peace 'til the morning's new light." (Three Day Band) In lieu of flowers or donations… In Laura's words... FOCUS: Be kind. Be brave. Be grateful. "Do not fear, only believe." Join us for a Celebration of Laura on Thursday, August 22, 2019, 7-9 p.m. remarks: 7 p.m. Victoria Inn Winnipeg, 1808 Wellington Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3H 0G3. Hotel room block rates available.

I'm several years late, and so sad to learn that Laura has passed. We attended Opera NUOVA together in 2008, and maintained contact, including meeting up in Paris when I was living there. I'm also from Winnipeg :) Sending deep condolences to everyone else whose lives Laura touched with her joyful presence.

What a horrific and untimely loss of a beautiful woman with a stunningly gorgeous voice, matched only by her warm personality and wonderful sense of humour! Village Voices of Markham was blessed to welcome Laura as our Mezzo soloist, when she awed audience and singers alike at my final (Messiah) concert as their conductor in 2015. I have missed seeing her smiling face in Iseler Singers concerts since she moved to Australia and very sad to never again have the opportunity to see, hear or work with her! My heartfelt condolences to Alan, Laura's parents, siblings and close friends.

Was shocked and saddened to hear the news of Laura's death. Her beautiful voice and her sweet personality will always remain in our hearts. She was so highly thought of in Calvin Presbyterian and Deerpark United Churches and the various Music Groups she faithfully supported.

My heart goes out to her family and friends. She will be missed, but there will be great rejoicing in Heaven.

I had never had the chance to meet Laura but I sure wish I had. She sounds like an amazing person and an even more amazing artist. My heart goes out to her family and all those who were fortunate enough work and spend time with her. What an amazing lady she was. And how lucky we were to have her in Winnipeg. There are many great artists in Winnipeg who have passed on. Many who we have met and read about and those whom none of us had the chance to see and share their talent with us. Maybe when we close our eyes and listen with out hearts we will be able hear her beautiful voice again. Bless you Laura. And thank you for spending some time with us and letting us experience the beautiful gifts that you shared with the world. Love to you and all those who were lucky enough to know you. Love forever xo Jay Brazeau

Laura has been a shining light in my life since we first met at the University of Manitoba. We sang together in Winnipeg and then in Toronto over the many years. Her positive energy was something to behold. She was a jewel. We'll miss you Laura.

Laura was a radiant person, inside and out. Her voice and laugh were infectious and she always uplifted my spirits. She always lifted others, and I was so happy for her when she met and fell in love with Alan, who was the only man strong enough to lift a person like Laura. She possessed such strength and sense of purpose. Laura was a wonderful friend to me during my time in Toronto, I met her socially in 2015 when I returned to the city, and we remained firm friends ever since. My deepest condolences to her nearest and dearest. I attach a photo from a concert we did together, she was also a wonderful talent.

Laura and I spent a couple of years working together in downtown Toronto in fundraising. She was loved by all those who worked with her- and was so often the diplomatic glue that brought us all together when things got hard. She was a great spirit, a bright light, a kind and generous soul. My sincerest condolences to her family- they raised a beautiful, talented, gracious and caring daughter. Laura, you will be deeply missed.

Laura and I were classmates at U of T, and occasional colleagues in various Toronto ensembles. We saw each other rarely. But Laura's warmth and cheerfulness always made you feel like a valued friend, and I always looked forward to working with her. I'm very sorry that she was taken in this way, and I send my warmest thoughts and condolences to her family and close friends.

I first met Lo in the Manitoba Opera Chorus in 1997. Her charisma, talent, and compassion for everyone who crossed her path was nothing short of inspiring Did we ever have fun every time we were together. When I reflect on the most monumental moments of my life, Laura was always with me. I will always cherish the times we spent together and know her spirit, voice, and vivacious laugh will live on through those who are left behind. Say hi to Pete for me. I know the two of you are blowing the roof off the joint. Love you always, Coco
