Laura Theilman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 29, 2009.
Laura Louise Theilman Laura was born on December 13, 1919 in Dundurn, SK and passed away on Saturday June 27, 2009 in Saskatoon, SK. She lived her entire life in Saskatchewan. At two years of age Laura moved with her family to farm near Bradwell, SK. She attended the one room Onward School, grades one through ten, taking grades nine and ten through a correspondence course, and graduated grade eleven at Bradwell High School in June 1936. She went on to graduate from Success Business College in Saskatoon with a Certificate of Business Educators of Canada, in 1939. Laura was employed with R.M. of Monet in Hughton, Sk, and with Waterloo Manufacturing Company, Saskatoon, Sk prior to commencing employment with the Federal Government, Unemployment Insurance Commission in Saskatoon on December 27, 1941. After thirty eight and a half years with the Commission, she retired in June of 1980. In 1977, three years prior to retiring, she was very proud to be awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal. Laura was actively involved as a volunteer with the Western Development Museum, commencing in 1966 when the Museum was located on eleventh street west. She was also a lifetime member of the Thresherman's Club, the Boomtown Volunteer Association and became a member of the Federal Superannuates National Association. Her activities were curtailed in the past few years due to an arthritic condition. She also had a lifetime love affair with horses and for years had a saddle horse boarded at facilities in and or near Saskatoon. The highlight of her retirement years was taking part in The Colony Trek in 1982, and in the Prince Albert Centennial Wagon Train in 1983. Laura drove a team of horses with a covered wagon in both events. Laura thoroughly enjoyed life, liked fun and laughter, dancing and a good party, riding and driving horses, entertaining, and doing a good days work when on the job. She also enjoyed traveling throughout Canada and into many areas of the United States. Laura is survived by: her brother Charles (Carol) Theilman of Saskatoon, Sk; sister-in-law Vivian Theilman of Saanichton B.C.; niece Joann (Romeo) Strasbourg, their children Aaron and Austin; and nephew James (Nadia) Theilman of Victoria, B.C. She was predeceased by: parents, father Henry on February 2, 1959 and mother Elizabeth (Trautman) Theilman on January 7, 1977; brother William Theilman of Saanichton, B.C. on February 16, 2007; and long time friend and companion Lawrence (Larry) Butler on July 8, 2003. Laura was such a special friend at the C&PO's mess. Funny, appreciative, honest, independent, passionate, friend are just a few words to describe Laura. She was great example to every woman ... to everyone who ever met her.

Laura was a dear family friend, and we will all miss her very much. If it weren't for Laura's matchmaking skills, our parents wouldn't have met. Our heartfelt condolences, and relief that her departure was a peaceful one.

It was such a pleasure to have known Laura. I hope now she is at peace. She was a great person and it was a priviledge to have had our life path's cross. My condolences to the Theilman family and to Barb.

I was honored and privileged to have been one of Laura's friends for 61 years.
I admired her for, and remember her for, the enthusiasm and enjoyment she found in all parts of her life and the devotion shown to her family and friends
My heart goes out to her family

Although I hadn't seen Laura in recent years, I do remember with fondness the interesting and encouraging conversations we would have when I worked for the WDM (both back in the mid 70s and again in the late 80s. My caring thoughts go out to her family.
