Laura White Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 16 to Dec. 17, 2015.
Laura White March 20, 1933 - December 11, 2015 "In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." Abraham Lincoln

Laura Mae White (nee Owen) passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary, Alberta on December 11, 2015. Laura leaves behind a legacy of generosity, practicality, and unconditional love. Laura was born in Natal, BC on March 20, 1933. Laura was determined, strong, independent and bright growing up in the Porcupine Hills and Coleman. These youthful aptitudes led her to a successful career as an Accountant and Office Manager with the Canadian Petroleum Association. Her perfectly balanced cheque book and good business head remained a trademark throughout her life. As a young wife and mother, Laura was dedicated to her family near and far. She worked hard and was endlessly practical, which she balanced perfectly with her sharp sense of humour. Laura, and her husband Gordon, were known for opening their home to those in need. Old and young alike were welcome to share a meal and some fellowship, day or night. Laura was an active member of the Anglican Church throughout her life.  Her caring spirit and strong faith led her to take on a variety of volunteer roles over the years. Some of these "volunteer" roles even included tending family pets, like frogs and fish! She was also an accomplished singer, as well as an excellent pianist/organist. Laura shared her musical talent as a church choir director and she was a longtime member of The Festival Chorus. She and Gordon traveled extensively with both, friends and family. Laura's Christmas baking is particularly legendary, and her recipes will persevere for generations to come. She was known for remembering everyone's favourites, and spoiling each person with special treats. Laura always loved watching a spectacular sun rise or set, and she even overcame her fear of water to get a better view from the dock. Laura, forever 39, will be cherished in the memories of her children, grand children, great grandchildren, friends and extended family. Her sparkle, her spirit, her kindness, will live on forever. Laura was preceded by her husband, Gordon White, a kindred soul. She is survived by her children: David White (Sheilah), Carol Duncan (Burke), and Michele White; her grandchildren: Carey (Elise), Scott (Andrea), Tyler (Robin), Daniel (Selena), Anna (Tony), Alex (Eric); and, her great grandchildren: Scarlett and Violet. A celebration of Laura's life will be held Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 1:30 pm at St. Andrews Anglican Church in Calgary, Alberta. Laura's family wishes to thank the staff at Rockyview General Hospital for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Festival Chorus.

To Laura's family, I am so sorry to hear of Laura's passing I sang with her in Festival Chorus for many years and served on the
Executive with her as Treasurer, where she shared her professional knowledge so willingly and spent endless hours on preparing grant applications and financials that kept the chorus singing. It was a pleasure to know Laura and make great music with her.

Laura White was a wonderful friend. I appreciated her sense of humour, her no nonsense attitude and her ability to put things in perspective. She had a beautiful voice and sitting with her in church was a pleasure. She knew all about picking hymns to be sung in church. Laura loved her family very much as well as their spouses and her grandchildren. She appreciated all they did for
her. I expect the choir in Heaven will have the addition of her lovely voice as she loved to praise God. God Bless you dear Laura. I will
miss our lunches and chats. I will always remember you. My deepest sympathy to all the family.

To David,Carole, Michael and family, My condolences to all of you. I have known Laura since I moved to Calgary in 79 and attended St Marks and then when we both moved on to St Andrews. Her and Gordon were such a big part of those two churches, she will be greatly missed. I live in Kimberley now so will not be able to be there on Sat. I hope you have a wonderful celebration of her life. Jackie Leach

My condolences. Laura was my first boss when I joined CPA back in 1986. She was always patient and kind - with a wicked sarcastic streak.

Laura will be fondly remembered as a true "western spirit"; always standing tall and strong, ready and steady, with a great dry wit, and at the same time arms and heart always warm and open.
