She was born in Spartanburg, SC on January 27, 1944 and moved to Ocala shortly after where she spent her early years. She moved to Forest City, NC as a teenager and graduated from Cool Springs High School. She then attended Medical University of South Carolina where she received her nursing degree. She married her high school sweet heart, Hugh Avant in 1965. They then resided in Chapel Hill, NC where she gave birth to two beautiful daughters, Sondra in 1968 and Alicia in 1970. They eventually moved to Gainesville in 1971 where they set up Hugh's dental practice where she worked for over 25 years. Upon retirement they moved to New Smyrna Beach. LaVelle was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed playing tennis and golf and was an avid fisherwoman. She was a loyal friend to many and an inspiration to her family and friends through her unwavering faith in God and eternal optimism. Her spiritual life was enriched by her involvement in Trinity United Methodist Church and Coronado Community United Methodist Church. Most of all Lavelle loved spending time with her three beautiful Grandchildren. One of her favorite sayings was 'We make a living by what we get...we make a life by what we give.' She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Stella McCulloch, brother, Ted McCulloch, and daughter, Alicia Avant Erwin. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Hugh Avant; daughter, Sondra Avant deLourche and son-in-law Steve; son- in law, Nelson Erwin; and grandchildren, Ashley, Marina and Grant. Dear Hughand Family, I was so saddened to learn about LaVelle. I have so many wonderful memories of out times at Cool Springs and on the basketball team. We spent so much time together as neighbors and did some pretty crazy things. I will never forget her beautiful smile and caring heart. My love and sympathy to you all. Dear Hugh and Family,
I have never forgotten LaVelle over the years. She was a good friend in High School, as was her brother Ted. I am so sorry for your loss and wish we could have talked more over the years. I will never forget her smile and her dimples, and her humor. Bless you all.

We felt a special gift was given to us when we met her only a few years ago, and we were instant friends. We will really miss her Hugh, and at this time we are praying God gives you a strong peace, knowing that He is holding her in His arms. He also feels your pain and wants you to feel His love for you as He will continue to walk with you through all the days ahead.
We will see you in October. Blessings, Bill and Karen Myers

LaVelle was one of those rare, extraordinary people who had the knack of making you appreciate all of the wonderful things in this life. I never once heard her complain about ANYTHING, and she enriched my life with her friendship. I think she was the bravest person I have ever known. My heartfelt prayers go out to Hugh, Sondra and the grandchildren. I wish them comfort in their time of grief, and Godspeed to LaVelle as her pain has ended and she rests comfortably in the arms of the Lord.
