Lawrence Bostrom Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 27, 2024.
Lawrence J Bostrom (Larry), 92, died peacefully November 21, 2024 at Gladeview Rehabilitation and Health Center in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.

Larry was born in Jamestown, New York to the late Anna (Johnson) and Aaron Bostrom on October 27, 1932. He attended Jamestown Public Schools and graduated from Jamestown High School in June 1951. He received a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University Of Michigan in February 1956 and a MS in Engineering Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in June 1971. Participating in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corp in Michigan, he was commissioned as an Ensign USNR after graduation and served on active duty as Engineering Officer on the minesweeper USS Exploit. He returned to Jamestown and taught high school until 1965 when he moved to Connecticut to work at Hamilton Standard, a Division of United Technologies. The family moved to Suffield and resided on Misty Meadow Farm, for which he had a love/hate relationship with the old farmhouse that was constantly in need of care. He retired from Hamilton Standard in 1992.

Retirement and all the wonderful plans he and his wife Shirley had were cut short by the murder of their daughter, Margaret. They were active members of Survivors of Homicide and for eight years served on the Advisory Council for the Connecticut Office of Victim Services. Along with his wife, they spoke about the murder of Margie and signs of domestic violence in Connecticut high schools, colleges, prison and at conferences. They were also invited to speak nationally at conferences across the country.

Larry loved animals, having horses, dogs, cats, goats, ducks but his favorite was his beloved Bo, a rescue golden retriever. Every fall the TV was tuned to University of Michigan football and winter UCONN basketball, both the men and women. He was actively involved in his Gladeview community, including participating in everything from bingo, breakfast club and music.

He is survived by his daughter Ruth and her husband Richard Terray, granddaughter Abigail Margaret and her husband Brendan Wolf, his grandson Jacob Pierce Grover and his two great grandchildren Reid and Sloane Wolf as well as nieces and their children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirely Pierce Bostrom, daughter Margaret and Kathy Bostrom and brothers Roland and Burdette Bostrom.

Service and celebration of life is planned for January 4th, 2025, at 11:30am, at Swan Funeral Home, located at 1224 Boston Post Rd, Old Saybrook, CT.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to New Horizons (Connecticut Coalition against Domestic Violence) at 19 Grand Street, Middletown, CT 06457.

I remember when Larry came back from an overseas trip with the Navy. I was about 12. He brought back dolls of Greek soldiers and foreign coins. My sisters and I were so fascinated by his travels and happy with the gifts.
