Lawrence Farber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 15, 2011.
Farber, Lawrence Alan, MD 78, of Scottsdale, Arizona, passed away peacefully with his family at the Sherman Home Hospice, on April 29, 2011, after a valiant six-year battle against cancer. The son of the eminent philosopher and university professor, Marvin Farber, and his wife Lorraine, Lawrence (Larry) Farber was born on March 24, 1933 in Buffalo, NY. He grew up in a family that placed emphasis on education. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Univ. of Rochester and by age 23 he completed his medical degree at the Univ. of Buffalo Medical School. Beginning in 1957, Larry served at the Public Health Service N.I.H. for two years. He completed his clinical training in Neurology at the University of Minnesota in 1962. He was a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and Member of the American Academy of Neurology since 1958. He was a founding partner of the Noran Neurological Clinic in Minneapolis, MN, where he practiced neurology for 32 years. Larry was also a dedicated teacher, working as a Clinical Professor of Neurology associated with the University of Minnesota. After retiring from medical practice in 1993, Larry and his wife Seija moved to the Scottsdale area, at which point, Larry embarked on a second career as a large-format photographer. For the past 17 years, he has traveled widely, pursuing his passion for fine art landscape photography. In time, he became a master printer, working in various mediums, in both black-and- white and palladium. His love of photography was infectious and he forged many lifelong friendships in the photo community, leading to the co-founding of Imageworks.org (where you can see his photography) a large format photography society in Arizona. Larry was something of a Renaissance man. Beyond medicine and photography, he had a passionate interest in science, art, history, and classical music. He loved golf, and being outdoors, and was an avid reader. With his family and friends, Larry was a constant source of encouragement and intellectual enthusiasm. A kind and loving man, he had a zest for life, and a wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed; we have all lost a truly great and noble man. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Seija Farber; his children, Lawrence (Sue) Farber, Jr., Robert Farber, M.D. Katherine (David) Trautman; step-children Kristina (Michael) Gill, Esq. and Brian (Andrea Camuto) Peterson, P.h.D.; his grandchildren, Jason (Missy) Farber, Jacob, Joey (Megan) Farber, Chris, Steven, Ryan, Annie, Rachael, Sean, Brian, and Annika; great-grandchildren Ella Grace, Izzy and Jason Jr.; brother Roger (Gail) Farber, M.D., and sister Carol (Michael) Reddy, M.D. Memorial service will be in Minneapolis, MN, at the Lakewood Cemetery Chapel on May 21, 2011. Visitation 1:30-2:00 p.m. and memorial service at 2:00-3:00p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, or to the charity of your choice.

My life was upended by Epilepsy at 12 yo in 1959. Working with Dr Farber was a godsend from that time forward. He made this very young girl feel like she wasn´t abnormal. It´s been a long journey but made so much easier by his knowledge, patience and persistence. Seizure free since 8/8/1971. Count my blessings for having Dr Farber in my life.

My condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Farber. I had seizures as a child and was lucky enough to have had Dr. Farber at the Noran Neurological Clinic in Mpls Mn. I am now 55 years old and have been seizure free since my teens. I owe it all to the skill and dedication of Dr. Farber.
I have been recently referred again to Noran Neurological Clinic for an eye/head issue and I happened to stumble on an article mentioning him and felt the need to say "Thank You" for a job well done. I am sad to hear of his passing but his legacy lives on through his patients, clinics and photography.

To the Farber family, I hope you know what a truly wonderful physician your husband and dad was. He was incredibly compassionate. He had such an easy laugh and a spark for life and learning. He treated me as an adult and at the same time, he sounded like a dad talking to one of his kids. You are so very fortunate to have shared your lives with him. Just as I'm sure your lives are so very sad without him.

In a long carrier as a photographer and teacher, I have met hundreds of people coming from varied backgrounds and approaches to their art. Larry stands out as one of the most talented and dedicated. But above all he was among the finest human beings I have had the pleasure of knowing. I will miss him: looking at images, drinking wine while listening to Schubert’s Trout Quintet, or just prying into his marvelous intellect.

Thank you, Larry. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Now I feel only pain at losing you, but I will carry you forward with me, all the lessons I learned from you, my dear friend and mentor. You were always something of a superman in my life, a great role model, whose brilliance, kindness, love of life, generosity, and humor served as inspirations as I came of age. I will miss you. I love you.
