Lawrence Guay Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 26, 2017.
Mr. Lawrence "Larry" E. Guay, 70, of Pittsfield passed away, peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at Berkshire Medical Center after a courageous battle with Leukemia. He was born in Pittsfield on September 3, 1946 the son of George E. and Emily A. Cordes Guay.

Larry was a very close and special friend to the members of the Pittsfield Police Department where he was given the official title, "Honorary Police Officer Guay". He would also spend time helping at King Kone on First St., the former Joe's Lunch Box and later when it became Brenda and Company Caterers.

He enjoyed going to the Highland Restaurant, Burger King and was a regular at Dunkin' Donuts.

In Larry's younger years he loved to play pin ball and to go bowling. Larry enjoyed buying scratch tickets and listening to oldies music. His biggest love was people and his beloved Pittsfield Police Department. Larry was a "gentle giant" who touched thousands of people in 70 years on earth with his infectious smile. Larry was also known by his honorary titles, "Mayor of Fenn St." and "The Weather Man". Just two weeks ago, he made a guest appearance on WTEN News 10 in Albany and delivered the weather alongside Steve Caporizzo.

Larry's family had recently set up a Facebook page, Love For Larry, so friends could share their love and support for Larry. They also asked friends to send Christmas cards, knowing that this may be Larry's last Christmas. Larry received over a thousand cards from around the world, which, as he said, made him feel "famous".

He is survived by his sister, Patricia A. Wojcik, and her husband, John; two nieces, Amy Skubel and Melissa Letalien; nephews, Ryan Guay and Paul Guay; great nieces, Victoria Skubel and Mariah Letalien and 2 great nephews, Evan Skubel and Owen Letalien; a half-brother, Leonard Guay and several other nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Richard E. Guay; a nephew, Peter Guay who died in 1986 on the same date as Larry, January 24; two half-brothers, Edward and George Guay and a half-sister, Eunice Wehry.

Funeral Notice: Funeral services for Mr. Lawrence "Larry" Guay will be Saturday, January 28, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church on Fenn St., with the Rev. Ralph Howe, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North St., Pittsfield MA will be on Friday, January 27, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society, care of the Dwyer Funeral Home, in his memory.

Larry...I never had the honor of meeting you, but let it be said that both Pittsfield and the world are better places because you were there. Now heaven is a little brighter because of your presence. Many people will miss you, but they will all see you again on the other side. My condolences to your family.

I first met Larry many years ago, when i would work late at the Onota building. Larry would see my light on, see my truck near by and come in and ask if i needed a coffee or anything.

Sometimes we just chatted. Larry's positive outlook and cheerfulness was so infection that any stresses that were occupying my mind would instantly disappear.

As I look back and see how much good cheer he spread and how much love and good cheer was returned his way - I truly think Larry was a messenger of God, right here on earth.

To say he will be missed is an understatement. The job of being a friend is hard, and Larry was up to the task. I am heartened to see that so many others were up to the task and returned Larry's friendship and love as well.
