Age 63, resident of Amherst, NH, died June 11, 2006 at the Elliot Hospital, Manchester, NH as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident He was born in Wilkinsburg, PA on January 12, 1943, a son of the late Edmund G. & Elizabeth L. (Haldeman) Slocum. Mr. Slocum was raised and educated in Pittsburgh, PA. He graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, where he majored in physics and was a member of the wrestling team. He had been a resident of Amherst for the past 31 years and had formerly resided in Nashua, NH and Massachusetts for several years. Mr. Slocum was a software engineer and owned Datasmith Company, a software consulting business in Amherst, NH for 17 years. While living in Amherst, Mr. Slocum was very active in community affairs. He served 6 years on the school board, a member of the Ways & Means Committee, a Scout Master and Committee Chairman of the Boy Scouts Troop #613, Amherst. Mr. Slocum was currently serving his 2nd term as a New Hampshire State Representative having been elected in 2002. Mr. Slocum was a member of The Church of the Holy Spirit, Pepperell, MA. He was a loving husband and a selfless and devoted father and grandfather. He especially enjoyed fishing with his grandsons and was an avid runner, having finished three marathons, most recently the 2001 Boston Marathon. Family members include his wife of 38 years, Jill M. (Guinon) Slocum of Amherst, NH; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Stephen G. & Katie Slocum of Newton, MA, John W. Slocum of Melrose, MA; a daughter and son-in-law, Penny L. Slocum & Timothy Manning of Middletown, CT; 2 grandsons, Alexander and Aaron Slocum, both of Newton, MA; 2 sisters, D.J. Hammerschmidt of Pittsburgh, PA, Louise Forsythe of Denver, CO; his mother-in-law, Marjorie Guinon of Nashua, NH; several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Visiting hours are Thursday, June 15th from 2-4 & 6-9 pm in the SMITH & HEALD FUNERAL HOME, 63 Elm Street, Milford, NH. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:00 pm in the Mont Vernon Congregational Church, Main Street, Mont Vernon, NH, followed by cremation. Burial will be in Meadowview Cemetery, Amherst, NH, at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to the Boy Scout Troop #613, c/o Richard Donnelly, 5 Pulpit Run, Amherst, NH 03031 or Cornerstone Policy Research, 136 N. Main Street, Suite 2, Concord, NH 03301. Smith & Heald Funeral Home, Milford, is in charge of arrangements.
