Leon Anderson Obituary

Leon Richard
Anderson
November 26, 2005, marked the passing of my sweet husband, Leon Richard Anderson, 64, just 2 short months after losing his mother who was 92. After one last battle, he finally succumbed to the chronic lung disease that especially plagued him in his later years. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Leon was born on November 6, 1941, to Lindsay & Thelma Mahoney Anderson in Price, Utah, the third of six children.
As a young man, Leon was active in the Boy Scouts and, in the face of physical limitations, also in various sports. He graduated from Provo High School in 1960 after which he spent a challenging summer in Boise, Idaho, working for the U.S. Forest Service. That summer was a touchstone for Leon as he made a commitment to serve the Lord that guided the remainder of his life. He served an LDS mission in Argentina from 1961 to 1964 after training with the first group of missionaries assigned to the newly formed Missionary Language Institute. He graduated from BYU in 1967 with a degree in Youth Leadership.
I met Leon in Detroit, Michigan, where he was working professionally for the Boy Scouts of America, at an M-Men and Gleaner winter party. We were wed and sealed on June 17, 1968, in the Salt Lake Temple by President Spencer W. Kimball. In 1972, we returned to Utah where my brother-in-law, LaMont Nielsen, taught him the carpentry skills that he used throughout the rest of his life. In 1978, he went to work at the BYU Carpenter Shop where he worked for 25 years, which was a great blessing to our family.
Leon served happily and faithfully in the church all his life and was currently serving as a temple worker and as the 1st counselor in the branch presidency at the Utah State Hospital in Provo Ð a position he loved. Notably, he also served as a bishop in the Provo 1st Ward, as a branch counselor in the MTC, and in the Scouting program where he received many awards including the distinguished Silver Beaver Award.
Our family was blessed with seven children: Richard, South Korea; Christine (Larry) Oso, Arizona; Natalie (Dave) Garrett, Oklahoma; Julia (Todd) Wamboldt, Santaquin, Utah; Lindsay (Kelley), Oregon; Katee, faithfully serving an LDS mission in the Chile Concepcion South Mission; and Malena, Arizona. They in turn have blessed us with 10 beautiful grandchildren who were and remain the light of our lives.
Leon is survived by me, Kathryn Pearson Anderson, his children and grandchildren, his five siblings: Lynette (Duane) Harmon, David (Nellie), Linda (Jess) Nuttall, Mark (Betty), and Judy (Kent) Talbot, and my eight siblings and their spouses. He was preceded in death only by his parents and my brother Roy.
Family and friends are invited to attend a viewing on Tuesday, November 29, from 6 Ð 8 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home at 85 E. 300 S. in Provo. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the Provo 1st Ward building, 100 E. 200 S., with a viewing from 9:30 to 10:45a.m. Interment will be in the Provo City Cemetery. Kathryn,

Hopefully you'll remember me! I was Clark's first wife . . . and was with the Anderson family yesterday at Dorothy's son's wedding. She told me about Leon passing away. I was surprised and yet felt badly that we haven't stayed in touch. Know that I'm thinking about you at this time . . . I'm in the phone book -- feel free to call when you get a chance!

Love, Anita

Kathryn,

We are so grateful to have served with Leon in the Branch presidency at the state mental hospital. What a tremendous example he was and is to us. Always there, always serving with a smile on his face.

We were so happy last year when he brought a crew from BYU to remodel part of our basement. He and they were professional in every way. These carpenters brought a special spirit into our home every day that they were there.

We are profoundly blessed to know him and you.

Dear Friends,

I am so sorry that Pat and I were unable to attend Leon's funeral. We have so many good memories of your family. For me as your Home Teacher and when Leon went me to take Krisi to D.C. It was such a long trip with little sleep.

How is the family doing? I guess they were all there? We sure would have liked to see them. I have been out of the house twice in two months, after a 3 week stay in the hospital. I tried to talk Pat into going, but she would not let me go. I guess she was right as much as we both wanted to go.

Tell everone hello. I'm about out of space.

We sure do love you guyes,

Ned and Pat

We were so surprised to learn this morning of Leon's passing. Our hearts goes out to his family, especially to Katy, so far away. Leon set an unsurpassed example of service and commitment that will not be soon forgotten. He will be missed.

Anderson Family,

My deepest condolences upon the loss of the family patriarch and gracious soul.

I know Leon because of his years of service at BYU-Provo. He always had a huge smile on his face and was willing to answer any question I had regarding the work he and his fellow workers were doing around campus. He took pride in his work.

Thank you for sharing him with so many of us.

(I took early retirement from BYU-Provo in the summer of 2004. Leon is one of the positive persons I remember.)

Sincerely,

Dr. Janice W. Clemmer

I served with Brother Anderson in the Provo Baptistry. He was always happy and positive. He liked to talk about his children and what they were doing. I was impressed with the trips he was always taking to see them. My last visit with him was walking out of the temple and hearing about the latest trip he was taking to see their family. He had a great spirit and it was always enjoyable to be around him. He will be missed in our early Friday devotionals and service in the baptristy. Wynette Christensen

Uncle Leon, we know you're with the Angels and in the loving arms of your parents and our Savior, Jesus Christ. We will miss your sense of humor and the quiet and humble way you did things. We will take care of your sweet wife and family. We love you Uncle Leon and can't wait to be with you and Grandma Sanders again.

Dear Kathryn,

We are so sad for us and so happy for Leon that his time to go home has come! You will never know of the love we have for him. While on our mission at the hospital we learned so much from Leon.

He was a man of principle but he expressed it with so much concern for the patient. Blessings were his "best foot forward."

Thank you for sharing your very special companion.

All our love,

Norma & Darrell
