Leonard William Black
August 18, 1947 - August 15, 2024
On August 15, 2024, at the age of 76, Lenoard William Black passed away in Helsinki, Finland while touring the Baltics. Leonard resided in Kaneohe, HI, a locale that became part of his identity after decades of living on the island. He was a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of many.
Born in New York City, Lenny dedicated much of his life to cultivating and nurturing the lives of youth. He had a way with kids that was evident in each interaction and relationship he built. Naturally, he pursued a career in education. He began teaching at Assets, a school for gifted students in Honolulu, HI, in June 1992, where he specialized in a collaborative, problem-based mathematics curriculum. It is there that he influenced his community and served with unwavering commitment until his retirement in May 2016. His passion for education was evident in his efforts to inspire his students by incorporating creativity, individuality, humor, and joy in each class he led. The friendships he fostered, the lessons he taught, and the encouragement he provided impacted a lifetime of students who still hold him near and dear in their hearts today. In retirement, he continued to support the next generation through the Len Black Resiliency Award Scholarship, a monetary gift awarded to a graduating senior who demonstrates resilience and grit.
Len grew up in the hamlet of Kerhonkson, in New York's Catskill Mountains. He graduated from Rondout Valley Central High School in 1965 where he was known for his good humor and athleticism; he lettered in basketball, football and wrestling, and was an active member of his class and the Student Council. In 1969 he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Alfred University.
In his free time, Len enjoyed crocheting whimsical stuffed animals and unique hats made of scraps of leather and yarn. He also loved origami. Throughout his life, he made origami boxes, envelopes, cranes or other animals, and puzzles. Lenny was also an avid traveler, relishing the opportunity to explore the world during his retirement. He visited countries such as France, Italy, Thailand, Morocco, Indonesia,
Bali and India, embracing different cultures and experiences along the way. He was always planning his next trip - New Zealand. His adventurous spirit was infectious, and he felt joy and excitement at being able to see the world.
Lenny was known for his amiable essence, welcoming nature, and a heart of gold. Always ready with a smile or a helping hand, he gave more than he took from this world. He is survived by his brother Edward Black, sister-in-law Geraldine Moreno-Black, brother-in-law Ted Morris, and cherished nieces Tovah Moreno-Black, Shaina Fawn, Akira Ilana Black Bernier, and Simy Moreno-Black, as well as his grand-niblings, Levi Bernier, Harper Bernier, Aviana Ixchel Moreno-Townes and Lucien Finch Moreno-Townes. Leonard's legacy of love, generosity, and dedication to education will forever be remembered by all who knew him.
An intimate service with his closest family and friends was held in Rio Rancho, NM where he was laid to rest next to his parents, Eleanor and Abraham Black. A celebration of life will be held in Hawaii to honor his Assets 'ohana in August 2025.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Len Black Resiliency Award Scholarship (
