Leslie BRYANT Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Jan. 7, 2015.
BRYANT, Leslie William
August 7, 1929 - January 3, 2015
BRYANT, Gwendolyn Jeanette (nee Quigg)
August 13, 1930 - December 23, 2014
The family of Leslie Bryant sadly announces his passing on Saturday, January 3, 2015 less than two weeks after his wife Gwen, of 61 years. They are survived by their three sons, Colin (Janice Pye), Russell (Darlene) and Scott (Noreen) as well as their pride and joy, their grandchildren: Elizabeth (David Waselenak), Ryan (Béa Cartier), Victoria (Lance Plante), Aidan, Kayla and Kyle.
Les attended normal school after graduating high school and initially taught at Hansen's Corner and Lucknow schools. Les and Gwen lived in Edmonton for a short while after they were married, and then moved to their farm in the Keephills area in 1958, where they lived and farmed for almost 40 years. During that time, Les began teaching at Keephills School and became principal after only two years. He earned his Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta while teaching, farming and parenting. He remained principal at Keephills School until his retirement in 1985. Both Les and Gwen were very active in the Keephills Athletic Association as well as the Hills of Hope Historical Society, and gave generously of their time and talent.
Les and Gwen enjoyed travelling and took several memorable trips together. They took pleasure in having their grandchildren stay with them, going to exercise, and the tranquility that comes in retirement. Gwen loved to bake, especially pies and squares, and Les loved to eat them. It was a perfect match.
The family thanks the staff of the ICU and CCU units of the Misericordia Hospital for their compassionate care of Les during his final weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully requests that donations be made to Alzheimer Society Canada or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
A joint memorial service for Les and Gwen will be held on Friday, January 9, 2015, at 1 p.m. at the Parkland Funeral Home located at 3502 – 44 Avenue, Stony Plain, Alberta.

Our deepest sympathies to the entire family. Les was a very gentle soul; I recall my Grade 1 inoculations when he was Principal. I was so terrified of receiving 'the jab', and Les was so patient in encouraging me to relax and receive what everyone else bravely accepted. It didn't work, but I'll never forget his gentle encouragement.

Rest in peace.

Our deepest sympathies to Colin, Russell and Scott in the very sad loss of both their parents. We as fellow educators, always enjoyed visits with Mr. Bryant. He was the wonderful principal of Keephills School, dedicated and committed to excellence, kind to all. The link between Duffield and Keephills Schools was made strong because of Les's deep interest in the growth and development of his students after leaving Keephills. He championed fair play, the inter school softball games are strong in our memories. Keith and Margaret Asquith

Sending my heartfelt condolences to the family. Les, AKA Mr. Bryant, was a teacher of mine many, many years ago. I remember him with fondness. My first recollection of Gwen and Les is when they still lived in Edmonton. Where does time go? The Bryant and Quigg families were pioneers in the Keephills and Highvale area. May they RIP and May God bless them and their families.
