Leslie Tod Thomas passed away December 25, 2004, surrounded by his family. His death came after a very short but courageous battle with cancer.
Born May 16, 1941, in Fortuna, he attended grammar school in Rohnerville (Toddy Thomas was his uncle). Les graduated from Fortuna High School in 1959 and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1960. In 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Paine. During his eight years in the Air Force, he was stationed in Spain, Arizona, California and Viet Nam. After eight years of service he spent many years working and teaching in the banking profession. He later rejoined the service in the Army National Guard, stationed both in Santa Rosa with the 579th Engineer Battalion and in Fairfield, and completed his 20-year military career.
After retirement, he enjoyed working with the seniors at Fortuna Adult Day Health Services.
Les is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary; his son, Greg of Sacramento; his daughter, Kathy of Rocklin; his father, Fred of Fortuna; and his granddaughter, the apple of his eyeâ Gabriella of Sacramento.
Les was preceded in death by his mother, Olieva in 1994 and his brother, Leon in 1993.
Friends and family are invited to services to be held Wednesday, December 29, 2004, at 1:00 P.M. at the Fortuna Church of the Nazarene, 1355 Ross Hill Road, Fortuna, California 95540.
Internment will follow at Sunrise Cemetery in Fortuna.

Fred, Mary, Kathy, Greg and Families,
So sorry to read of Greg's departure for your sakes. I can empathize with your grief, having lost Leo to cancer on 11/20. Be comforted in reminding your selves that he is Heaven and pain free.
The last time I saw him ministering Dad, and his smile and greeting was as ready as always.

Dear Mary
This is a voice from the distant past. I lived down the street from you in Riverside Acres. Nancy Horner told me about Les. You and he were both so wonderful to me when we were at Fortuna High. My heart breaks for you, and your family, over your loss.
Love, Helga

Dear Mary Ann,
There never are words adequate enough to express feelings of sympathy to the family left behind. I remember Les in high school as a very warm and personable young man and those traits would have stayed with him throughout his life. May God bless you and your family and see you through the trying days ahead.

Dear Mary: We were so saddened to hear about Les. We attended grammer school and high school with him and our parents were good friends with Toddy and his family. We were raised just a couple blocks from each other in Rohnerville and used to go fishing in the creek near his house.
We had a great time as kids running around the big town of Rohnerville.
Our deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Dear Mary and family,
So sorry to hear about Les's passing. I'm sorry I didn't get to see him while I was home. My Uncle Wayne Gildesgarde from the Senior center certainly admired Les and would continually tell me about the good things he did for those at the center. You are in our prayers.

Mary and family. I was on the football and basketball teams with Les at FHUS. He was a gifted athlete. And a fellow Veteran at a time when everyone did not serve. In my opinion a true American and patriot. He will be missed. I looked forward to seeing him at our 1960 class reunion in 2005. God Bless Les, Mary and family.

Kathy and Greg,
I was so sad to hear about your dad. Even now as I think of him, I can picture his warm smile that always seemed to light up the room. My prayers and thoughts are with you, and I will continue to pray that the Lord will comfort you during this time and the months ahead. At least, you can have the peace of knowing he is in heaven in the arms of Lord and waiting to be with you again some day.
Love and Friendship,

My condolences to Les' family. I knew Les from the Natl. Guard and recently from the V.A. Clinic in Eureka where I am the security guard. I rode to San Francisco with Les on the V.A. bus and sat in the front with him both going there and returning. I last saw Les when he came into the V.A. clinic in a wheel chair and I shook his hand. I will miss Les - he was my friend.
