Age 94, of Shadyside, passed away on October 25, 2012. Beloved husband of Hilary L. Smith for 72 wonderful years; father of Susan L. Parr of Northbrook, IL and Dr. Howard (Judy) Smith of West Hartford, CT; beloved brother of Marion Spirer of Oakland, the late Phyllis Rosenfeld of Columbus, OH, and the late Milton Smith of Monroeville, PA; grandfather of Bruce (Dee) Parr of Squirrel Hill, Lauren (Chris) Weiland of Evanston, IL, Jonathan Parr of Chicago, IL, Michele Smith of Boston, MA, Gregory (Natalie) Smith of Marietta, GA, Michael Smith of Los Angeles, CA, and David Smith of New York City; great-grandfather of Jackson and Meier Parr of Squirrel Hill, Lawson and Lindsey Smith of Marietta, GA. Graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University. Naval engineering officer in the Pacific Theater during WWII and the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Witnessed the flag raising over Mt. Suribachi. Decorated for bravery under fire while rescuing naval personnel from the burning destroyer USS Longshaw. Former Vice-President and Treasurer, A&B Smith Co. Former President, Pittsburgh Clan, Carnegie-Mellon Alumni Association and awarded the outstanding service citation for loyalty and unselfish service to his alma mater. Boy Scout leader and committeeman, Rodef Shalom Troop. Through his blessedly long life, he was dedicated to his family and understandably proud of his children's and grandchildren's educational accomplishments. He was an insatiable reader of history and biography, an avid supporter of Israel's Technion Institute, and a dedicated Pittsburgh sports booster. Services at Rodef Shalom Temple, 4905 Fifth Avenue, (at Morewood) on Sunday at 2 p.m. Visitation at Temple one hour prior to services, (1 - 2 p.m.). Interment West View Cemetery of Rodef Shalom Congregation. Contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements entrusted to RALPH SCHUGAR CHAPEL, INC.
