Linda Legg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2024.
Linda Margaret Legg (nee Kempkes) passed away on April 30, 2024, in Mount Pleasant, New York, at 81 years of age surrounded by her daughters. She was born on April 15, 1943, in Yonkers, New York to Inge & Paul Kempkes. Her passing was due to complications from a head injury sustained during a fall while attending a competition at West Point. She enjoyed a weekend creating memories with family and friends while taking in the beautiful scenery of the Hudson Valley and reminiscing about the hikes, concerts, and sporting events that she had enjoyed in the region where she raised her family.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Melinda Ylagan (husband Robert Ylagan) and Maryellen Cutler (husband Eric Cutler). Linda was a cherished grandmother to Maya Ylagan, Timothy Dziena, Geoffrey Dziena, Elliot Ylagan, Lance Ylagan, Anya Dziena, and Dominick Dziena. She was a loving little sister to Paul H. Kempkes and Anne Wyman and a special aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was a special friend and companion to Frank Melrose. Linda was preceded in death by her husband, George F Legg in 2000, and her brothers, William Kempkes and Herbert Kempkes.

Linda was a dedicated Registered Nurse and worked primarily at the Asthmatic Children's Foundation in Ossining, NY, and St. Patrick's School in Yorktown Heights, NY. She also worked part-time at The Otis Elevator Company in Yonkers, NY. These positions allowed her to balance her work and home life. Her life's work was dedicated to helping and caring for others.

Linda was a devout member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Yorktown Heights and more recently St. Clement Catholic Church in Saratoga Springs. In her retirement, she kept busy sewing quilts, weaving baskets, gardening, walking, and helping others. She was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Arimathea Society at St. Clement Catholic Church. She could also be found volunteering with food service at weekly Bingo sponsored by the Knights of Columbus in Saratoga Springs. Linda frequently attended the YMCA where she continued to work on her strength and balance while encouraging peers to do the same. The weekly walking group kept growing as she motivated friends to join to stay physically fit and share camaraderie.

The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Academy on Broadway in Yonkers awarded Linda the opportunity to attend the institution on a scholarship. She later earned her nursing degree as a proud member of the class of 1964 at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in New York. The school was founded by Sisters of Charity. The friendships and mentorship she received at these establishments instilled in her a desire to care for others. Linda often referred to herself as a byproduct of charity having attended two schools that provided her with opportunities to better her future which she likely would not have had being the daughter of young immigrants raising a large family.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 9, from 5-8 pm at Burke Funeral Home, and a Catholic Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, May 10, at 11 am at St. Clement's Catholic Church in Saratoga Springs. Her cremated remains will be interned at St. Peter's Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
The William J. Burke & Sons / Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes in Saratoga Springs, NY, are assisting with the funeral arrangements.

Linda, I'll miss your smile. I'll miss our private talks. I'll miss your warmth and caring works. But most of all I'll miss you my dear friend. Rest in peace my friend.

I think it was while we were working at Bingo that Linda encouraged me to take the trip to Italy and Sicily that she so fun-lovingly described. Linda was always a smiling, kind and caring presence in any group or situation. She will be well remembered and dearly missed.
I am sure she went on the express train to Heaven.

I have many fond memories of her and the family visiting Maine in the summer and also of us making trips to see her. She was always so fun to be around.

We would laugh when Aunt Linda would say Massachusetts.
