Linda Madden Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 8 to Nov. 11, 2023.
Linda Mary (Sloan) Madden, age 76, passed away on November 6, 2023 in her home in Hagerstown, with her husband and best friend of 52 years, Stephen Madden by her side. She was born on July 10, 1947 in Cumberland, MD to the late Charles Patrick and Mary Marguerite (Garlitz) Sloan.

Linda was a graduate of Ursuline Academy High School in Cumberland, MD and then went on to receive her Bachelor degree from Towson State College. After college, she was a teacher in Alleghany County, MD and later in Baltimore County, MD. After her kids were in school, Linda worked as a substitute teacher and for Perini Construction for a few years before going to work for the State of Maryland. Linda retired after 23 years of service working as a Case Manager for the Hagerstown prison system.

She was a woman of deep faith and a member of St. Ann Roman Catholic Church for decades.

Linda loved spending time with her husband, her kids, and her grandkids. She could be found cheering loudly at her kids' and then grandkids' sporting events. She loved gardening, history and was an avid reader. She also loved to write and even published a book a few years ago entitled, "Tell Me a Story" about her childhood in Cumberland, MD. Until she became ill, she enjoyed spending time with her friends at the Potomac Fish and Game Club, the Redman Club, and the American Legion.

Linda was a loving, self-sacrificing, compassionate person whose unyielding strength and perseverance helped her to overcome many challenges throughout her life. She was most proud that she chose Steve as her husband with whom she laughed often, loved always, and shared the best life.

Linda was the beloved wife of Stephen Madden, loving and devoted mother of Sean Madden and his wife Holly of Atlanta, GA and Deanna Madden Becker and her husband Jason of Hagerstown and furbaby, Jack, proud grandmother of Haiden Madden, Tylar Madden, Isabelle Becker, Willem Madden, Irelyn Madden, Emma Becker, and Addison Becker, great-grandmother of Draven Markley and Nova Madden, Step-daughter of Rosemary Sloan, loving sister of John Sloan and his wife Suzanne and Margie Maloney, Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom she loved very much.

A Prayer Service will be held on Wednesday, November 15th at 11:00am at Harman Funeral Home, 305 North Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD, with Deacon Bill Nairn officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Linda's name to Hospice of Washington County, MD (hospiceofwc.org) or to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation (crohnscolitisfoundation.org).

I fondly remember Linda, especially for her poem about the "Little Birdie " (with a broken wing).

I worked with Linda for many years at Roxbury Correctional Institution. She was always ready with a smile or cheerful comment and was a warm and caring person. She had a great sense of humor and I am sure many inmates knew she was doing her job to the best of abilitity to help them overcome the issues that sent them to prison and help them prepare for eventual release. May she rest in peace.

I am so very sorry to learn of Aunt Linda´s passing. She was a loving and warm soul. I will always remember her laugh and how she lit up the room when I was young and she would come to visit us Baar´s for a backyard pool party or trip to the boat. She was always up for a fun time and brought the fun with her.
